ISPS Ship Security Officer (SSO)

Objective
The ISPS Ship Security Officer (SSO) Training prepares you for the duties of the SSO on board. The Ship Security Officer (SSO) will be designated by the shipping company. He will be in charge of monitoring compliance with the stated security measures. The SSO, in cooperation with the CSO, will ensure the safety awareness of the crew on board. The SSO will coordinate cargo and store security in coordination with the responsible shore officers. The SSO also serves as a liaison between the CSO and Port Facility Security Officers.

Prerequisite(s) for participation
Minimum 1 year of sailing time

Course content
The threat to shipping

  • Terrorism
  • Terrorist weapons and possible weapons
  • Security
  • Measures to prevent the boarding of stowaways
  • Measures to prevent piracy
  • Knowledge of the ISPS Code and Chapter XI of the SOLAS
  • Legislation in force in the U.S., Canada and the U.K.
  • Responsibilities of government, flag state government and certifying agencies

Certification
The course concludes with a test. If one completes the test with a passing grade one obtains the certificate:
Proficiency for Ship Security Officer, STCW reg. VI/5 section A-VI/5, Table A-VI/5.

Validity
Unlimited, with the notation of having completed a minimum of 1 year of sailing time during a period of 5 years from the date of issue of the certificate.
