NOGEPA 2.2A Offshore First Aid

Introduction:

On each offshore mining installation, including normally unmanned installations, at least 2 persons must be designated and trained as Offshore First Aiders. These first responders are responsible for providing first aid for accidents and acute illnesses on the mine installation.

Course type:

This course is an emergency (specialist) training course aimed at developing specific knowledge and skills for providing first aid offshore.

Target audience:

This course is designed for anyone designated to perform first aid duties in a first aid organization on an offshore mining installation, such as medical personnel, safety officers and employees with a first aid background.

Objective:

The purpose of the course is to provide participants with the required knowledge and skills to:

  • Provide first aid to accident victims or acutely ill persons on a mining installation;
  • Accompany sick or injured persons during transportation from the workplace to shore;
  • To coordinate and assist in serious accidents involving multiple victims;
  • Managing the first aid equipment on the offshore mining installation; and
  • Effectively communicate with the doctor ashore and perform first aid actions at that doctor’s direction.

Learning Objectives:

The following learning objectives are covered during the course:

  • Basic principles of administering first aid;
  • Stopping bleeding and simple wound care;
  • Immobilization of fractures;
  • First aid for shock;
  • Resuscitation in cardiac arrest;
  • Use of an automated external defibrillator (AED);
  • First aid for unconscious patients;
  • Immobilization of patient(s) with suspected back and/or neck injury;
  • First aid for drowning;
  • First aid for hypothermia;
  • Personal hygiene for treating open wounds;
  • Preparations for transportation of injured/sick persons;
  • Use of first aid equipment;
  • Use of dressings;
  • Use of trauma scale;
  • Communication and medical advice via radio;
  • Giving injections into a muscle at the direction of a physician; and
  • Maintaining medical records.

Prerequisites for practical exercises:

In order to carry out practical exercises, we work with a maximum of 12 participants per course and a maximum of 6 participants per instructor. This ensures adequate attention and guidance during the exercises.

Duration:

The basic course lasts 4 days, while the refresher course lasts 2 days. During these courses, all necessary topics are thoroughly covered to train participants to become competent offshore first responders.

Validity:

The certificate obtained is valid for two (2) years. After this period, participants must take a refresher course to update their knowledge and skills and renew their certificate.

Prerequisites for participation in the refresher course:

Participants must hold a valid Nogepa 2.2 basic certificate registered in the Personal Safety Logbook, or a valid “Oranje Kruis Certificate.” Also accepted for the refresher course is a valid registration as a physician or a valid “BIG” registration for medical personnel.
