GWO - Basic Safety Training (Offshore)

The GWO – Basic Safety Training Offshore (BST) is designed for anyone who will be working in the offshore wind industry. The training consists of and combination of theoretical education and practical training. To participate, you must be sufficiently fit and in possession of a Winda ID.

This GWO – Basic Safety Training (BST) course will enable you to work safely in a wind turbine environment and support others when needed. You will build knowledge and skills of First Aid, Working at Heights, Manual Handling, Fire Awareness and Sea Survival. You will also learn how to evacuate, rescue and administer appropriate First Aid to victims in an emergency.

The GWO – Basic Safety Training course is composed of the following modules;

  • First Aid (BST FA) – 1 day
  • Working at Heights including Manual Handling (BST WAH-MH) – 2 days
  • Fire Awareness (BST FAW) – 0.5 day
  • Sea Survival (BST SS) – 1 day
  • Manual Handling (BST MH) separate – 0.5 day

Fire Awareness

The purpose of this module is to teach basic knowledge and skills to prevent fire, assess an incipient fire, and if it can be safely extinguished using the available fire extinguisher(s) or if extinguishing cannot be done safely, evacuate.

Working at Height

The purpose of this module is to teach the basic knowledge and skills necessary to use personal (fall) protection equipment, work safely at heights and perform basic rescue work in a wind turbine environment.

Sea Survival

The purpose of this module is to teach the basic knowledge and skills for working safely at sea in a wind farm. You will learn to transfer safely from ship to wind turbine platform or vice versa. This section is also known as Boat Transfer or Ship Transfer. In addition to transferring, you will learn how to handle man overboard situations or survival at sea.

First Aid

The purpose of this module is to teach basic First Aid. Upon completion, you will be able to apply basic first aid to accidents in a wind turbine environment.

Manual Handling

The purpose of this module is to encourage positive behavior when manually moving loads. You will learn how to safely lift and move weight in a wind turbine environment. The training is designed to improve participants’ awareness of physical strain and ergonomics in the working environment of a wind turbine.

Admission Requirements:

  1. The practical components are physically demanding. You must be fit enough to complete all practical components. Due to the use of personal protective equipment, your body weight must not exceed 120 kilograms.
