Our basic safety for deckhands course provides comprehensive training in occupational safety, use of personal protective equipment, awareness of specific vessel-related hazards and appropriate action in emergency situations such as fire and person overboard. The course meets the Standards for Basic Safety Training for Deckhands according to CESNI (Decision: CESNI 2021-I-1) and Directive (EU) 2017/2397. Upon successful completion of the course, you will receive a Basic Safety Deckhand/CESNI certificate recognized by the CBR. With this certificate you can then apply for a service booklet from SAB.
Exemption
If you have a valid STCW Basic Safety Training (Fisheries) certificate, you can apply for the Basic Safety Deckhand with exemption. Please contact us for this! If you have a valid FAFS/EHBO Diploma, you can apply for the Basic Safety Deckhand with exemption, please contact us!
Objective
During the course, participants learn essential skills, including:
- Use of life-saving equipment to prevent drowning
- Specific working conditions on board a vessel
- Firefighting aboard a vessel
- Risks on board due to noise
- Handling hazardous materials on board a vessel
- Basics of first aid
Admission Requirements
To participate, you do not need any specific prior knowledge. The minimum age for participation is 16 years old. A valid ID, certificate of inland navigation inspection, and dry underwear are required. An inland navigation inspection can be arranged prior to the course.
Certificates
Upon completion of the training, the participant will receive:
- Basic Safety Training for Deckhands Certificate (CESNI/CBR).
- First aid officer (FAFS) certificate
Lesson times
On the first day, participants are expected at 8:15 a.m. for registration. The training starts at 08:30 and ends around 16:30. The price includes registration fees, practice materials, teaching materials, lunch, coffee and tea (excluding VAT).
Language
The training is delivered in Dutch by default, but can be provided in English if needed.
