STCW - Medical First Aid (MFA) & Medical Care (MC).

Introduction
At sea, seafarers aboard ships are often deprived of usual access to shore-based medical care while working. The training of crew members to provide medical care, the availability of proper medical equipment as well as telephone medical advice from Radio Medical Service doctors contribute to the quality of medical care on board.

Objective
Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to take effective action in case of accidents and/or illness on board.

Target audience
Captains and seafarers to whom medical care is assigned on board.

Eligibility Requirements
For the Medical First Aid course, the student must possess:

  • valid Basic Safety Training certificate
    For the Medical Care course, the student must possess:
  • valid Medical First Aid certificate


Course content
Courses include the following components:

  • Basic Life Support
  • medicines on board
  • abdominal and chest examination
  • breaks
  • transport
  • wound care and suturing
  • infusion
  • pathology
  • inject
  • traumatology
  • hypothermia

Certification
Upon successful completion of the course, the student will receive the certificate:

  • Proficiency in Medical First Aid, STCW reg. VI/4, section A-VI/4, Table A-VI-4-1
    and/or
  • Proficiency in Medical Care, STCW reg. VI/4, section A-VI/4, Table A-VI/4-2

Validity
5 years

Course duration
Medical First Aid: 2 consecutive days
Medical Care: 3 consecutive days
Medical First Aid and Medical Care: 5 consecutive days

Lesson times
08:30 – 17:00.

Number of trainees
Minimum 4, maximum 12 trainees
