Introduction
The course combines theoretical instruction with realistic practical exercises. Participants learn to identify risks, use firefighting equipment safely, and organize effective evacuations. Through scenario-based training in lifelike environments, participants gain the confidence to act quickly and appropriately in emergencies.

Objective
The goal of this course is to train participants to become qualified and confident emergency response officers in fire control and evacuation. After completion, participants will be able to assess risks, select and use the correct extinguishing methods, and coordinate safe evacuations to protect both people and property.

Target group
This course is intended for employees who are responsible for safety within their organization or who act as company emergency response officers (BHV). It is suitable for safety coordinators, facility staff, team leaders, and members of works councils.

Course content
The Firefighting & Evacuation course consists of both theory and practice, covering the following topics:

  • Fire safety and risk analysis – Identifying fire hazards, conducting risk assessments, and applying preventive safety measures.
  • Firefighting techniques and extinguishers – Correct use of handheld extinguishers and fire blankets, and applying the right extinguishing method for different fire classes.
  • Evacuation procedures – Developing and executing evacuation plans, organizing escape routes, and managing communication during emergencies.
  • Communication and teamwork – Working effectively within the emergency response team and coordinating with supervisors and emergency services.
  • Practical exercises and scenario simulations – Real-life drills with actual firefighting and evacuation scenarios to apply the acquired skills.

Certification
Upon successful completion, participants receive the officially recognized NIHBV Certificate Firefighting & Evacuation.

Day 1 - NIBHV Firefighting and Evacuation

The Basic Emergency Response – Firefighting and Evacuation course focuses on recognizing, preventing, and extinguishing small fires, as well as safely managing evacuations. Participants practice door control, using fire blankets, hose reels, and portable extinguishers such as powder, foam, and CO₂ types. During evacuation exercises, they learn how to act in smoke conditions and guide colleagues and visitors to designated assembly points. The day concludes with a written examination on firefighting and evacuation, followed by an evaluation.

Practical training with portable fire extinguishers

Small Fire Extinguisher Training Area

Participants learn how to safely and effectively extinguish fires using handheld and portable fire extinguishers. Training takes place in realistic outdoor fire scenarios, allowing trainees to experience firsthand how different extinguishers work and what their limitations are.

What makes this facility unique is the hands-on approach to a variety of fire situations — from small liquid and gas fires to solid materials. Participants not only practice firefighting techniques but also learn to assess safety, distance, and the appropriate extinguishing strategy.

  • STCW – including Basic Training, Advanced Fire Fighting, Proficiency in Survival Craft (PSCRB/FRB), Medical First Aid, Medical Care and Security Awareness.

  • BHV: recommended or required annually by most organisations
  • First Aid: validity depends on the certification body, usually annual maintenance and reassessment within 2 years

Yes, we offer blended learning options combining online theory with a shorter practical session.

Bring valid identification and comfortable clothing. For forklift or aerial platform training, safety shoes are required. PPE will be provided where necessary.

Yes, at DRTC we provide online training and e-learning modules. For example, we offer the online Maritime Dutch Law Assessment.

You can cancel your booking by contacting us via email or phone. For open enrolment courses you may cancel free of charge up to 5 working days before the start. For customised training you may cancel free of charge up to 14 working days before the start. If you cancel within those deadlines the full course fee will be invoiced.
