The SCV Code Boat Engineer Grade I (1) course is established under the Safety Code for Small Commercial Vessels (SCV Code), which defines operational standards for safety, crew certification, welfare, and marine environmental protection for small vessels operating within the Caribbean Trading Area. It applies to commercial vessels between 5 and 24 meters in length. The Boat Engineer Grade I (1) training is designed for engineers responsible for the engine room of vessels with a main propulsion engine not exceeding 750 kW, operating in protected, coastal, and exposed waters. The course is provided by De Ruyter Training & Consultancy (DRTC) in Aruba, Bonaire, St. Eustatius, Curaçao, and Saba.

SCV Code Boat Engineer Grade I (1)

Introduction
The Caribbean Safety Code for Small Vessels (SCV Code 2021) ensures the safe and responsible operation of small commercial ships in the region. The Boat Engineer Grade I (1) program prepares marine engineers to manage propulsion and auxiliary systems on vessels under 24 meters. Participants gain technical and operational skills required for safe engine room operation, preventive maintenance, and effective response to emergencies.

Objective
The objective of this training is to equip participants with the knowledge and practical skills to operate and maintain ship machinery safely. Upon completion, participants will be capable of responding to emergencies, preventing marine pollution, executing maintenance procedures, operating propulsion and auxiliary systems, and applying seamanship and safety principles in daily operations.

Target group
The course is intended for engineers responsible for the engine room of vessels under 24 meters, with a propulsion power of up to 750 kW, operating in protected, coastal, or exposed waters within the Caribbean Trading Area.

Entry requirements
Participants must meet the following criteria:
  • Minimum age of 18 years
  • Valid medical certificate
  • Physically fit for participation in practical exercises
The following STCW Basic Safety Training certificates are also required (available at DRTC Caribbean):
  • Basic Sea Survival (IMO Model Course 1.19)
  • Elementary First Aid (IMO Model Course 1.13)
  • Basic Firefighting (IMO Model Course 1.20)
  • Personal Safety and Social Responsibility (IMO Model Course 1.21)
Course content
The training includes theoretical and practical sessions covering:
  • Emergency response and procedures
  • Technical work procedures
  • Marine pollution prevention
  • Ship engines and propulsion systems
  • Electrical systems, pumps, and auxiliaries
  • Outboard engines and maintenance
  • Safe working practices and procedures
  • Basic dry docking and seamanship
  • Vessel types and machinery layout
  • Basic onboard safety principles
Examination
Assessment is conducted through an oral examination testing knowledge of ship engines, propulsion systems, auxiliary equipment, and safe working procedures, as well as response to emergency situations.
 
Accreditation
The course is accredited by the Netherlands Human Environment and Transport Inspectorate (ILT).
 
Certification
Upon successful completion, participants receive the Boat Engineer Grade 1 certificate in accordance with the Code of Safety for Small Vessels (SCV Code), Chapter X and Annex 11.
 
Validity
The certificate is valid indefinitely, provided competence is maintained through operational experience.

For some courses, you can choose VAT exemption. This means the training will be invoiced without 21% VAT. The exemption applies only to recognised vocational training programmes that fall under official supervision by organisations such as ILT, OPITO, GWO, or NOGEPA.

Choose VAT exemption if you are taking the course for professional purposes or as a private individual without VAT deduction rights.
Choose including VAT if you are booking on behalf of a company that can reclaim VAT from the Dutch Tax and Customs Administration.

Your invoice will then state:
“Exempt from VAT under Article 11, paragraph 1, section o of the Dutch VAT Act 1968.”
