About this course

STCW Proficiency in Survival Craft other than Fast Rescue Boats (PSCRB) Refresher

Introduction
The PSCRB Refresher training is designed to update and maintain the existing knowledge and skills of seafarers in accordance with the requirements of the STCW Code, Section A-VI/2-1. The course revisits both theoretical knowledge and practical skills, including the use of survival craft, team coordination, first aid for survivors, and communication during emergencies.

Objective
Upon completion of the training, the participant will be able to act effectively in emergency situations, take command during evacuations and rescue operations, and operate and maintain lifeboats or liferafts safely.

Target group
This course is intended for seafarers who already hold a valid STCW Proficiency in Survival Craft other than Fast Rescue Boats certificate and wish to renew it. The course is mandatory for crew members responsible for operating survival craft (excluding fast rescue boats).

Entry requirements
Participants must hold:

  • A valid (not expired) STCW Proficiency in Survival Craft other than Fast Rescue Boats certificate

  • A valid medical certificate for seagoing service

  • Good health and physical fitness to safely participate in practical exercises (confined spaces, water activities, and heat exposure)

Course content
The course combines theory and practical exercises with a strong focus on realistic training scenarios. Topics include:

  • First aid for survivors: resuscitation, use of AED, treatment of bleeding, burns, hypothermia, and shock

  • Survival craft and evacuation: use, launching, and operation of lifeboats and liferafts, including embarkation from the water

  • Survival at sea: use of immersion suits and lifejackets, staying in liferafts, and performing survival actions as a team

  • Pyrotechnics and communication: use of smoke signals, hand flares, parachute rockets, and communication devices for search and rescue

  • Ship-specific procedures: implementation of emergency plans, management of survivors, and execution of assigned duties according to the onboard muster list

Certification
Upon successful completion, participants receive the Proficiency in Survival Craft other than Fast Rescue Boats Refresher certificate, officially recognized by the ILT and issued in accordance with STCW Reg. VI/2, Section A-VI/2-1, Table A VI/2-1.

Validity
The certificate is valid for five years and internationally recognized under the standards of the International Maritime Organization (IMO).

Two consecutive working days.

Maximum of 12 participants per group to ensure optimal guidance during practical exercises.

Day 1 - Sea survival

This day is dedicated to survival at sea. We discuss the safety equipment available and how to use it effectively. Additionally, you will learn how a lifeboat operates in practice and what to do if you unexpectedly end up in the water.

Day 2 - Lifeboats and Launching Systems

Day two covers the theory of different types of lifeboats and the operation of offload and onload release hook systems. The afternoon is dedicated to practical exercises, including the launching and handling of both the free fall lifeboat and the conventional lifeboat.

Our lifeboat, Fast Rescue Boat (FRB), and other rescue craft are also stationed here, allowing multiple training sessions to be conducted from one central location. For seafarers and maritime professionals who must comply with international STCW requirements.

Yes, our STCW courses are recognised by the Dutch flag state (the Human Environment and Transport Inspectorate – ILT). Each certificate includes the relevant STCW reference, ensuring international recognition.

We offer Basic Training (BT), Advanced Fire Fighting (AFF), Medical First Aid (MFA), Medical Care (MC), Proficiency in (Fast) Rescue Boats (PSCRB/FRB), and Security Awareness/Designated Duties.

Most STCW certificates must be renewed every 5 years (depending on the module and sea time requirements). Check the course page for exact details.

Yes, a valid maritime medical certificate is mandatory for participation.

Bring valid identification, a medical certificate (mandatory), and swimwear/towel if the course includes a pool module. PPE and rescue equipment are provided by DRTC.

 

Courses are available in Dutch or English. Additional support for reading difficulties can be arranged on request.
