NOGEPA 2.8A Leader Fire-fighting & Rescue Team Offshore

Introduction
During this intensive training, participants learn to operate as part of a coordinated team in offshore emergency situations. The course combines theoretical instruction with realistic practical exercises, focusing on the use of breathing apparatus, firefighting equipment, and rescue techniques under simulated offshore conditions.

Objective
The aim of the course is to train participants as competent members of an offshore fire and rescue team. Upon completion, they will be capable of acting safely and effectively under the direction of a team leader during fires, explosions, gas leaks, and other emergencies.

Target group
Personnel designated by their employer as members of a fire-fighting and rescue team on offshore oil and gas installations.

Entry requirements

  • Valid registration in the Personal Safety Logbook for the Basic Safety Training Offshore (0.5A or 0.5B)
  • Valid offshore medical certificate

Course content
The course includes both theory and practice, covering:

  • Firefighting in enclosed and open spaces
  • Rescue operations in hazardous environments, including helicopter incidents
  • Use of breathing apparatus and firefighting equipment
  • Handling incidents involving fire, gas, chemicals, and heavy loads
  • Team communication, coordination, and safety procedures
  • Evaluation and improvement of team performance

Practical training
Practical sessions are conducted under realistic offshore conditions, including firefighting, rescue, and teamwork exercises.
Each fire and rescue team consists of at least 5 members including the leader, with a maximum of 6 participants per instructor.

Certification
Participants who successfully complete the course receive the officially recognized NOGEPA 2.6A Fire-Fighting and Rescue Team Member Offshore certificate.

Validity
The certificate is valid for two years.

Day 1 - Fundamentals of firefighting and breathing apparatus

The first day of the NOGEPA 2.6A – Fire Fighting & Rescue course focuses on the role of the fire and rescue team on offshore installations. Participants learn how to respond to alarms, use personal protective equipment, and understand fire process hazards and dangerous goods. The day also covers inspection and maintenance of fire detection and extinguishing systems, pumps, and fixed installations. In the afternoon, participants train with breathing apparatus in the training facility, emphasizing safety, control, and communication.

Day 2 - Application of firefighting equipment and rescue techniques

Day two emphasizes the practical use of firefighting equipment, including hoses, nozzles, and portable extinguishers for class A and B fires. Participants also practice safe escape procedures from smoke-filled areas using escape masks. In the afternoon, they train with breathing apparatus during live fire sessions, including a flashover exercise to experience fire behavior and heat transfer in realistic conditions.

Day 3 - Leadership and incident management

The third day focuses on organizing and managing fire and rescue teams, maintaining communication, and controlling incidents. Participants practice leadership, casualty handling, and safe management of fuel and electrical systems. The afternoon includes complex practical exercises involving teamwork, coordination, and rescue operations in realistic offshore scenarios with multiple hazards.

Day 4 - Advanced firefighting and helicopter emergencies

The final day centers on advanced firefighting and helicopter emergency response. Participants extinguish plant and helideck fires using water, foam, and dry chemical agents, and learn to respond effectively to gas, oil, and chemical incidents. In the afternoon, they train on interior fires and helicopter fire scenarios, focusing on safe use of firefighting systems and the rescue of crew and passengers. The course concludes with an evaluation of performance and learning outcomes.

Participants learn how to safely and effectively extinguish fires using handheld and portable fire extinguishers. Training takes place in realistic outdoor fire scenarios, allowing trainees to experience firsthand how different extinguishers work and what their limitations are.
