NOGEPA 1.1B Refresher Helicopter Landing Officer

Introduction
This refresher course ensures that participants maintain their competence as HLOs, capable of managing helicopter deck activities under both normal and emergency conditions. The training combines theoretical instruction with practical exercises conducted in realistic offshore scenarios.

Objective
Upon completion of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Safely coordinate and control all helicopter deck operations
  • Respond effectively during normal and emergency situations
  • Handle passengers and cargo safely, including dangerous goods
  • Supervise fueling operations and perform quality control checks (if applicable)
  • Operate and maintain helideck fire-fighting equipment

This course is intended for personnel designated as Helicopter Landing Officers on offshore oil and gas installations.

Entry requirements
Participants must hold:

  • A valid registration in the Personal Safety Logbook for the Basic or Refresher Fire Fighting and Rescue Team course (2.6A/B), if fueling operations take place
  • If no fueling operations occur: a valid registration for the Basic or Refresher Helicopter Fire Fighting course (2.9A/B)
  • A valid offshore medical certificate

Course content
The training combines classroom instruction with practical exercises covering:

  • Hazards of helicopter operations, risk zones, and access/escape routes
  • Required personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • Helideck preparation, inspection, and use of firefighting equipment
  • Execution of normal and emergency procedures during landings and take-offs
  • Passenger and cargo handling, including hazardous materials
  • Weight and balance calculations
  • Fuel management and quality control (if applicable)
  • Emergency procedures and reporting protocols

Practical training
All practical skills are performed under supervision, with a maximum of six participants per instructor to ensure effective learning and individual attention.

Certification
Participants who successfully complete the course receive the officially recognized NOGEPA 1.1B Helicopter Landing Officer Refresher certificate.

Validity
The certificate is valid for two (2) years.

Day 1 - Refresher: Helicopter Operations and Safety

The morning session reviews key theoretical topics, including responsibilities, regulations, communication procedures, and safety protocols. In the afternoon, participants refresh their practical understanding of helicopter loading and unloading, handling special cargo, and performing fuel control and refuelling operations safely. The course concludes with a short test and evaluation.

Generally, OPITO certificates are valid for 4 years (FOET before expiry). NOGEPA: basic safety training 4 years, specialised training 2 years. Please check the course page for exact validity.

Yes, a valid OGUK or NOGEPA medical certificate is usually required.

Bring valid identification, your medical certificate, swimwear, and a towel for pool sessions. PPE and rescue equipment are provided by DRTC.

Courses are available in Dutch or English. Additional support is available upon request.

Yes, certain theoretical and practical components can be conducted on-site, provided that the facilities meet the required standards.

You can cancel your booking by contacting us via email or phone. For open enrolment courses you may cancel free of charge up to 5 working days before the start. For customised training you may cancel free of charge up to 14 working days before the start. If you cancel within those deadlines the full course fee will be invoiced.
