IntroductionDuring this course, participants learn how to correctly use radar for navigation and collision avoidance. The focus is on understanding radar operation, image interpretation, navigation procedures, and safety aspects. By using an advanced radar simulator, participants gain practical experience in a realistic and safe learning environment.
ObjectiveUpon completion of the course, the participant will be able to use radar effectively for navigation and collision avoidance, with a solid understanding of radar settings, image interpretation, and applicable maritime regulations. Participants will develop confidence in operating radar systems and analyzing moving targets under various conditions.
Target groupThis course is intended for anyone wishing to learn how to operate radar equipment on board ships. It is suitable for both novice seafarers seeking qualification for a maritime career and experienced crew members who wish to update their knowledge.
Entry requirementsThere are no specific prerequisites for participation in this course. The training is open to anyone interested in learning to use radar as a navigational instrument.
Course content
Principles of radar operation and radar technology
Operation and adjustment of radar equipment
Interpretation of radar images and plotting of moving objects
Radar navigation techniques and procedures
Safety aspects and regulations related to radar navigation at sea
Use of radar as a navigational instrument
CertificationUpon successful completion, participants receive the Radar Navigator Operational Level certificate in accordance with the international STCW requirements (Standards of Training, Certification, and Watchkeeping for Seafarers), Table A-II/1. This certificate confirms that the participant has acquired the required knowledge and skills to use radar safely and effectively for navigation at sea.
ValidityThe Radar Navigator Operational Level certificate is valid indefinitely and is internationally recognized within the maritime industry.
Course durationFive consecutive working days (Monday through Friday).
Course hours08:30 – 17:00 hours.
The first day focuses on the fundamental principles and regulatory requirements of radar operation. Participants gain insight into radar functions and settings, learning how to use the system effectively for safe navigation. Basic plotting techniques are introduced to analyze positions and courses on the radar display.
On the second day, participants explore advanced plotting methods, including true motion, relative motion, and the influence of course and speed on radar presentation. This knowledge is applied in simulator exercises designed to introduce realistic navigation scenarios.
The third day emphasizes radar image interpretation and the application of COLREGS (International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea). Participants practice using ARPA systems and apply collision avoidance procedures (BVA) during hands-on simulator sessions.
The 4th day consists of extended simulator exercises focusing on the use of AIS data, PI lines, and navigation lines. Participants learn to integrate these tools for optimal situational awareness and safe navigational decision-making.
The last day focuses on the full integration of all knowledge and skills acquired throughout the course. During advanced simulator exercises, participants demonstrate their ability to apply radar and navigation techniques in realistic operational scenarios. The training concludes with both a written theory test and a practical assessment, evaluating each participant’s competence in accordance with STCW requirements.
Our training locations are specifically designed to optimize your learning experience. With modern facilities, realistic training environments, and centrally located centers in Vlissingen and Groningen, we offer a professional and comfortable setting where practice and safety come together.
Realistic training with GMDSS and maritime communication.
The Classroom Simulation is equipped with modern communication systems, including the GMDSS (Global Maritime Distress and Safety System). Here, participants learn how to manage emergency, safety, and routine communication at sea safely and efficiently.
What makes this simulator unique is that trainees can practice all aspects of maritime communication — including distress calls, alerting, and coordination with rescue services — in a realistic yet safe environment.
Who is it for
The Classroom Simulation is used by maritime personnel, ship officers, nautical students, and offshore teams who need to be proficient in GMDSS operations and maritime communication procedures.
What you’ll practice
Under the guidance of experienced instructors, participants will learn to:
Operate GMDSS equipment for distress, urgency, and safety calls
Follow correct procedures for routine communication at sea
Collaborate and communicate effectively as a team during emergency scenarios
Practice realistic navigation and communication situations
Integrate communication within broader Full Mission scenarios

Maarten Janse was born and raised in Zeeland and has a deep connection with the sea. After completing his Bachelor of Maritime Officer degree at the Maritime Institute De Ruyter (2002–2006), he began his career as a 4th officer on the cruise ships of Holland America Line. In the years that followed, he progressed to 1st officer and gained worldwide experience in ship navigation and maneuvering, delivering safety training to crew in various emergency roles, organizing emergency drills, and leading teams responsible for the maintenance of lifesaving appliances and fire detection, prevention, and firefighting systems.
In 2022, Maarten made the transition to a shore-based position, wishing to spend more time with his family while sharing his extensive hands-on experience with others. As a Senior Maritime Instructor at DRTC, he delivers training such as AFF, PST, PSCRB, FRB, ECDIS, GWO, and MCRM, as well as modules within ship management. His trainings are realistic, practice-oriented, and always linked to real-world situations. Maarten holds the certificate of competency as Master Mariner (all ships) and Firefighting Crew Member, and is a certified CAE MCRM instructor, making him a specialist in maritime incident response and teamwork.
Maarten has a strong passion for sharing knowledge. As a black belt holder in Kyokushin karate, he enthusiastically taught both youth and adults for many years. That same energy, dedication and attention to the participant characterize his approach in every training he delivers.
DRTC provides a wide range of accredited safety courses for the maritime, offshore, wind and industrial sectors.
