About this course

Radar Navigator Operational Level

Introduction
During this course, participants learn how to correctly use radar for navigation and collision avoidance. The focus is on understanding radar operation, image interpretation, navigation procedures, and safety aspects. By using an advanced radar simulator, participants gain practical experience in a realistic and safe learning environment.

Objective
Upon completion of the course, the participant will be able to use radar effectively for navigation and collision avoidance, with a solid understanding of radar settings, image interpretation, and applicable maritime regulations. Participants will develop confidence in operating radar systems and analyzing moving targets under various conditions.

Target group
This course is intended for anyone wishing to learn how to operate radar equipment on board ships. It is suitable for both novice seafarers seeking qualification for a maritime career and experienced crew members who wish to update their knowledge.

Day 1 - Introduction to Radar and Basic Principles

The first day focuses on the fundamental principles and regulatory requirements of radar operation. Participants gain insight into radar functions and settings, learning how to use the system effectively for safe navigation. Basic plotting techniques are introduced to analyze positions and courses on the radar display.

Day 2 - Advanced Plotting Techniques and Initial Simulator Exercises

On the second day, participants explore advanced plotting methods, including true motion, relative motion, and the influence of course and speed on radar presentation. This knowledge is applied in simulator exercises designed to introduce realistic navigation scenarios.

Day 3 - Radar Interpretation and Collision Regulations

The third day emphasizes radar image interpretation and the application of COLREGS (International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea). Participants practice using ARPA systems and apply collision avoidance procedures (BVA) during hands-on simulator sessions.

Day 4 - Navigation with Radar and Advanced Tools

The 4th day consists of extended simulator exercises focusing on the use of AIS data, PI lines, and navigation lines. Participants learn to integrate these tools for optimal situational awareness and safe navigational decision-making.

Day 5 - Integration and Assessment

The last day focuses on the full integration of all knowledge and skills acquired throughout the course. During advanced simulator exercises, participants demonstrate their ability to apply radar and navigation techniques in realistic operational scenarios. The training concludes with both a written theory test and a practical assessment, evaluating each participant’s competence in accordance with STCW requirements.

Realistic training with modern maritime simulation

Classroom + GMDSS

The Classroom Simulation is equipped with modern communication systems, including the GMDSS (Global Maritime Distress and Safety System). Here, participants learn how to manage emergency, safety, and routine communication at sea safely and efficiently.

What makes this simulator unique is that trainees can practice all aspects of maritime communication — including distress calls, alerting, and coordination with rescue services — in a realistic yet safe environment.

Who is it for

The Classroom Simulation is used by maritime personnel, ship officers, nautical students, and offshore teams who need to be proficient in GMDSS operations and maritime communication procedures.

What you’ll practice

Under the guidance of experienced instructors, participants will learn to:

  • Operate GMDSS equipment for distress, urgency, and safety calls

  • Follow correct procedures for routine communication at sea

  • Collaborate and communicate effectively as a team during emergency scenarios

  • Practice realistic navigation and communication situations

  • Integrate communication within broader Full Mission scenarios
