IntroductionThe STCW – Electronic Chart Display and Information System (ECDIS) course is an interactive five-day training program for officers holding a certificate of competency for vessels over 500 GT. The course is designed to meet the international requirements of the STCW Convention (A-II/1 and A-II/2) and the SOLAS regulations for safe navigation.
ObjectiveDuring the course, participants learn to use ECDIS safely and effectively in daily ship navigation as well as during complex voyages. The training combines theoretical instruction with realistic simulator exercises. The focus is on acquiring and demonstrating the competencies required to use electronic chart navigation correctly and responsibly.
Target GroupNavigational officers and watchkeeping officers responsible for navigation on board vessels over 500 GT who must comply with STCW requirements for the use of ECDIS.
Entry RequirementsParticipants must:
Hold a valid Certificate of Competency (CoC) in accordance with STCW ’95 or an equivalent qualification.
Have completed their initial training period at sea if they are maritime academy students (minimum SMBW level or equivalent nautical knowledge).
Have a sufficient command of the Dutch and/or English language.

Course DurationFive consecutive working days
Number of ParticipantsMinimum: 4 | Maximum: 10
Class Schedule08:30 – 17:00 (daily)
On the first day, participants are introduced to the purpose and functions of the ECDIS system. They learn about the value of ECDIS for safe and efficient navigation, the use and interpretation of electronic charts, and the correct operation within the simulator environment.
During this day, participants focus on the practical application of ENC’s (Electronic Navigational Charts) in navigation. They will also refresh their knowledge of navigational instruments and learn how to plan and monitor voyages using the ECDIS system.
On this day, participants learn how to prepare and plan a route using the ECDIS system. In addition, they are trained to recognize, interpret, and appropriately respond to ECDIS alarms.
On this day, participants practice the practical use of the ECDIS system as it is applied on board. The focus is on performing realistic navigation scenarios and applying the acquired knowledge in real-life situations.
During the final part of the training, attention is given to the procedures and responsibilities associated with the use of ECDIS on board. Participants learn to assess the importance of system and data reliability, including how to manage the limitations of electronic charts and implement appropriate backup procedures. The day concludes with an examination that assesses both theoretical knowledge and practical skills in accordance with applicable national and international standards.

Realistic training with GMDSS and maritime communication.
The Classroom Simulation is equipped with modern communication systems, including the GMDSS (Global Maritime Distress and Safety System). Here, participants learn how to manage emergency, safety, and routine communication at sea safely and efficiently.
What makes this simulator unique is that trainees can practice all aspects of maritime communication — including distress calls, alerting, and coordination with rescue services — in a realistic yet safe environment.
Who is it for
The Classroom Simulation is used by maritime personnel, ship officers, nautical students, and offshore teams who need to be proficient in GMDSS operations and maritime communication procedures.
What you’ll practice
Under the guidance of experienced instructors, participants will learn to:
Operate GMDSS equipment for distress, urgency, and safety calls
Follow correct procedures for routine communication at sea
Collaborate and communicate effectively as a team during emergency scenarios
Practice realistic navigation and communication situations
Integrate communication within broader Full Mission scenarios

Maarten Janse was born and raised in Zeeland and has a deep connection with the sea. After completing his Bachelor of Maritime Officer degree at the Maritime Institute De Ruyter (2002–2006), he began his career as a 4th officer on the cruise ships of Holland America Line. In the years that followed, he progressed to 1st officer and gained worldwide experience in ship navigation and maneuvering, delivering safety training to crew in various emergency roles, organizing emergency drills, and leading teams responsible for the maintenance of lifesaving appliances and fire detection, prevention, and firefighting systems.
In 2022, Maarten made the transition to a shore-based position, wishing to spend more time with his family while sharing his extensive hands-on experience with others. As a Senior Maritime Instructor at DRTC, he delivers training such as AFF, PST, PSCRB, FRB, ECDIS, GWO, and MCRM, as well as modules within ship management. His trainings are realistic, practice-oriented, and always linked to real-world situations. Maarten holds the certificate of competency as Master Mariner (all ships) and Firefighting Crew Member, and is a certified CAE MCRM instructor, making him a specialist in maritime incident response and teamwork.
Maarten has a strong passion for sharing knowledge. As a black belt holder in Kyokushin karate, he enthusiastically taught both youth and adults for many years. That same energy, dedication and attention to the participant characterize his approach in every training he delivers.
DRTC provides a wide range of accredited safety courses for the maritime, offshore, wind and industrial sectors.
