STCW Crisis management and Human Behaviour (CMHB)

Introduction
The CMHB training provides insight into onboard emergency procedures, controlled responses to critical situations, and the safe management of passengers and crew. The course focuses on effective crisis management and behavioral control during stressful circumstances. This one-day training combines theoretical knowledge with practical experience.

Objective
Upon completion of the course, the participant will have the knowledge and skills to act effectively on board passenger and/or ro-ro vessels in emergency situations. The emphasis is on ensuring passenger safety, managing cargo, and maintaining the watertight integrity of the ship’s hull.

Target group
This course is intended for Masters, Chief Engineers, Chief Mates, Second Engineers, and any crew member responsible for, or designated to be responsible for, the safety of passengers, cargo, and the vessel during emergency situations.

Certification
Upon successful completion, participants receive the following certificates:

  • Proficiency in Crisis Management & Human Behaviour, STCW Reg. V/2, Par. 8, Section A-V/2-4, Table A-V/2-2

  • Proficiency in Passenger Safety, Cargo Safety and Hull Integrity Training, STCW Reg. V/2, Par. 8, Section A-V/2-5

The certificates are valid indefinitely.

Day 1 - Crisis Management and Human Behaviour Onboard

The first day focuses on developing the skills needed to respond effectively during shipboard emergencies. Participants learn to implement shipboard emergency procedures and optimize the use of available resources to control emergency responses. Emphasis is placed on managing and directing passengers and crew during crisis situations. The day concludes with a case study designed to strengthen decision-making and leadership under pressure.

Day 2 - Application and Operational Safety

The second day builds on practical application through additional case studies, allowing participants to analyze complex emergency scenarios and develop effective response strategies. Topics include loading and embarkation procedures, carriage of dangerous goods, and essential stability, trim, and stress calculations. The program also covers procedures for opening, closing, and securing hull openings and monitoring ro-ro deck atmospheres to ensure operational safety.

Yes, our STCW courses are recognised by the Dutch flag state (the Human Environment and Transport Inspectorate – ILT). Each certificate includes the relevant STCW reference, ensuring international recognition.

We offer Basic Training (BT), Advanced Fire Fighting (AFF), Medical First Aid (MFA), Medical Care (MC), Proficiency in (Fast) Rescue Boats (PSCRB/FRB), and Security Awareness/Designated Duties.

Most STCW certificates must be renewed every 5 years (depending on the module and sea time requirements). Check the course page for exact details.

Yes, a valid maritime medical certificate is mandatory for participation.

Bring valid identification, a medical certificate (mandatory), and swimwear/towel if the course includes a pool module. PPE and rescue equipment are provided by DRTC.

 

Courses are available in Dutch or English. Additional support for reading difficulties can be arranged on request.

Yes, we can. You can request this when booking or contact us by email or phone. We will arrange a suitable hotel and package for your stay.

Based on Artikel 5 Annuleringen

  1. DRTC applies cancellation terms when cancelling training courses. A distinction is made between “open courses” and “customized courses.” A quotation is always provided for customized courses.

  2. Customized courses can be cancelled free of charge up to 14 working days before the start of the course.

  3. For cancellations of customized courses made 14 working days or fewer before the start of the course, 100% of the course fee will be charged.

  4. Open courses can be cancelled free of charge up to 5 working days before the start of the course.

  5. For cancellations of open courses made 5 working days or fewer before the start of the course, 100% of the course fee will be charged.

  6. Open courses can be rescheduled free of charge up to 2 working days before the start of the course.

  7. If a participant fails to attend at the start of the course, 100% of the course fee will be charged.

In mutual agreement, additional options may be considered beyond those stated in these terms.
