The STCW – Proficiency in Survival Craft & Rescue Boats (PSCRB) is a mandatory four-day training course for seafarers designated as crew members of a rescue boat. During this course, the participant learns how to prepare, launch, operate, and manage rescue boats (excluding fast rescue boats). The training includes practical exercises in handling rescue boats, engine operation, communication equipment, distress signals, and providing first aid to survivors.

STCW – Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boats other than fast rescue boats (PSCRB)

Introduction
The PSCRB training is intended for seafarers who are required to take command of a survival craft or rescue boat, other than fast rescue boats, in emergency situations. The course provides essential knowledge and skills to perform these tasks safely and effectively, in accordance with the requirements of the STCW Convention.

Objective
Upon completion of the course, the participant will be able to take charge of the preparation, embarkation, and launching of a survival craft, as described in the STCW section “Crew of survival craft.”

Target group
This course is designed for all seafarers designated on board as crew members of a rescue boat.

Entry requirements
Minimum age: 18 years

Participants must hold:

  • A valid medical certificate for seagoing service

  • A valid Basic Safety Training certificate

  • A valid Certificate of Competence (CoC) according to STCW (including Manila Amendments)

  • A minimum of six months of sea service

  • Good health and physical ability to participate in the practical exercises (confined spaces, heat exposure)

Course content

  • Maintaining rescue boats in operational condition

  • Taking command during launching and after launch

  • Operating the engine of a rescue boat

  • Handling survivors after abandoning ship

  • Practical exercises in launching and operating rescue boats

  • Use of communication equipment, locating beacons, and distress signals

  • Providing first aid to survivors

  • Evaluation of performed actions

The course is conducted in Dutch or English.

Certification
Upon successful completion, participants receive the certificate Proficiency in Survival Craft & Rescue Boats other than fast rescue boats, STCW Reg. VI/2, Section A-VI/2-1, Table A VI/2-1.

Validity
The certificate is valid for five years.

Course duration
Four consecutive working days.

Number of participants
Minimum of eight and maximum of twelve participants.

Day 1 - Introduction lifeboats

The four-day Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boats other than Fast Rescue Boats (PSCRB) course combines theory and practical exercises to fully prepare participants for the safe launching, operation, and maintenance of survival craft on board.

Day 2 - Lowering procedures for lifeboats and sea survival techniques.

Day two focuses on lowering procedures for lifeboats and sea survival techniques. Participants practice safe launching operations and develop essential survival skills under realistic conditions, including handling life rafts.

Day 3 - Conventional lifeboats

The third day centers on the free fall lifeboat and additional lowering procedures using conventional lifeboats. Participants practice safe entry, launching, and maneuvering under the supervision of experienced instructors.

Day 4 - Lifesaving first aid

The final day covers lifesaving first aid, teaching participants how to provide first aid to survivors and casualties, including resuscitation, hypothermia treatment, and other maritime emergency responses.

Yes, our STCW courses are recognised by the Dutch flag state (the Human Environment and Transport Inspectorate – ILT). Each certificate includes the relevant STCW reference, ensuring international recognition.

We offer Basic Training (BT), Advanced Fire Fighting (AFF), Medical First Aid (MFA), Medical Care (MC), Proficiency in (Fast) Rescue Boats (PSCRB/FRB), and Security Awareness/Designated Duties.

Most STCW certificates must be renewed every 5 years (depending on the module and sea time requirements). Check the course page for exact details.

Yes, a valid maritime medical certificate is mandatory for participation.

Bring valid identification, a medical certificate (mandatory), and swimwear/towel if the course includes a pool module. PPE and rescue equipment are provided by DRTC.

 

Courses are available in Dutch or English. Additional support for reading difficulties can be arranged on request.

You can cancel your booking by contacting us via email or phone. For open enrolment courses you may cancel free of charge up to 5 working days before the start. For customised training you may cancel free of charge up to 14 working days before the start. If you cancel within those deadlines the full course fee will be invoiced.
