About this course

STCW Security Awareness training for all seafarers (SA)

Introduction
This concise and practical training teaches participants how to identify possible threats, report security incidents, and follow the correct procedures in emergency situations. The course focuses on situational awareness and teamwork within the ship’s security framework, ensuring that every crew member contributes to maintaining maritime safety.

Objective
The aim of the ISPS – Proficiency in Security Awareness course is to enable participants to recognize and assess security risks and threats, understand and follow procedures in the event of a security incident, act appropriately during security-related emergencies, and gain knowledge of the Ship Security Plan and its implementation.

Target group
This course is intended for all seafarers serving on board ISPS-compliant vessels who do not have designated security duties. It excludes Ship Security Officers (SSOs) and crew members assigned with specific security responsibilities (Designated Security Duties).

Course content
The program includes both theoretical and applied topics, such as:

  • Reporting security incidents, including piracy or armed attacks
  • Understanding procedures to follow in case of a security threat
  • Acting during security-related emergencies
  • Familiarization with the Ship Security Plan and relevant security procedures

Certification
Upon successful completion of the course and final assessment, participants receive the internationally recognized Proficiency in Security Awareness certificate (STCW reg. VI/6, section A-VI/6, Table A-VI/6-1).

Validity
The certificate is valid for life and fully compliant with IMO and ISPS Code standards.

Day 1 - Shipboard security awareness

The one-day ISPS – Proficiency in Security Awareness course focuses on increasing crew members’ understanding of their role in maintaining shipboard security under the ISPS code. Participants learn key security terms and definitions and gain insight into the responsibilities of governments, companies and crew. The program also covers reporting procedures, potential threats and techniques used to bypass security measures. The day concludes with an emphasis on maintaining vigilance and awareness on board, followed by a written test and evaluation.

DRTC provides a wide range of accredited safety courses for the maritime, offshore, wind and industrial sectors.

  • STCW – including Basic Training, Advanced Fire Fighting, Proficiency in Survival Craft (PSCRB/FRB), Medical First Aid, Medical Care and Security Awareness.
  • GWO – Basic Safety Training (BST) and individual modules such as Working at Height, First Aid, Fire Awareness, Manual Handling, Sea Survival and Enhanced First Aid.

Yes, we can. You can request this when booking or contact us by email or phone. We will arrange a suitable hotel and package for your stay.

For some courses, you can choose VAT exemption. This means the training will be invoiced without 21% VAT. The exemption applies only to recognised vocational training programmes that fall under official supervision by organisations such as ILT, OPITO, GWO, or NOGEPA.

Choose VAT exemption if you are taking the course for professional purposes or as a private individual without VAT deduction rights.
Choose including VAT if you are booking on behalf of a company that can reclaim VAT from the Dutch Tax and Customs Administration.

Your invoice will then state:
“Exempt from VAT under Article 11, paragraph 1, section o of the Dutch VAT Act 1968.”

Yes, lunch and beverages are included in all full-day arrangements unless otherwise specified. On request, we can also assist with hotel bookings.

Payments can be made via iDEAL, credit card, or invoice (for companies). Payment by debit or credit card is also possible on location.

For all courses, you must be fit to participate safely. Please inform us in advance of any medical limitations. For STCW training, a valid medical certificate is required.

You can cancel your booking by contacting us via email or phone. For open enrolment courses you may cancel free of charge up to 5 working days before the start. For customised training you may cancel free of charge up to 14 working days before the start. If you cancel within those deadlines the full course fee will be invoiced.
