The ADN Basic Training is intended for crew members involved in the transport of dangerous goods on inland waterways. This five-day course is the mandatory foundation for anyone working as a skipper, helmsman, or crew member on a tanker or dry cargo vessel operating under the ADN Convention.

During the training, participants learn how to safely transport, handle, load, and unload dangerous goods in accordance with the current provisions of the ADN (Accord Européen relatif au transport international des marchandises dangereuses par voies de navigation intérieures). Upon completion of this course, participants are eligible to take the official ADN Basic Theory Examination administered by the CBR.

ADN Basis

Objective
The aim of the ADN Basic Training is to develop the knowledge and skills required to act safely and responsibly during the transport of dangerous goods. Participants learn to identify risks, apply relevant regulations, and respond appropriately to onboard incidents.

Upon successful completion of the course, participants will be able to work independently in accordance with the requirements of the ADN Convention and will meet the qualification standards necessary to take the official ADN Theory Examination with the CBR.

Target group
This course is intended for:

  • Skippers, helmsmen, and crew members involved in the transport of dangerous goods on inland waterways

  • Personnel responsible for loading and unloading vessels carrying dangerous goods

  • Shore-based staff responsible for safety during ADN-related transport operations

Course content
The training consists of five days of instruction combining theory and practice. Topics include:

  • Introduction and structure of the ADN Convention

  • Classification and categorization of dangerous goods

  • Product knowledge: physical and chemical properties

  • Exemptions and limited quantities

  • Safety equipment and facilities on board

  • Documentation, markings, and signage

  • Loading, unloading, and handling of dangerous goods

  • Segregation rules and product compatibility

  • Emergency procedures, incident response, and communication

On the fourth day, participants will take part in practical exercises that allow them to apply theoretical knowledge in realistic training scenarios.

Entry requirements

  • Minimum age: 18 years

  • Valid medical certificate for inland navigation

  • Proficiency in Dutch (spoken and written)

Certification
Upon successful completion of the course and passing the official examination with the CBR, participants receive the ADN Basic Certificate, officially recognized by the Centraal Bureau Rijvaardigheidsbewijzen (CBR).

Validity
Five years. Renewal is possible through the ADN Refresher Course.

Course recognition
This course is approved by the CBR and complies with the regulations of the Central Commission for the Navigation of the Rhine (CCNR) and the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management.

Day 1 - Introduction and Product Knowledge

The first day of the ADN course introduces the purpose and structure of the agreement, focusing on responsibilities and safety requirements for the transport of dangerous goods. Participants study product characteristics and properties, and learn the basic principles of loading, unloading, and transportation in compliance with ADN regulations. The day concludes with a practice test to review key concepts.

Day 2 - Loading, Unloading, and Cargo Space Handling

Day two focuses on the safe loading, unloading, and transport of dangerous goods. Special attention is given to the handling of cargo spaces, tanks, and adjacent areas, emphasizing ventilation, cleaning, and safety procedures during cargo operations.

Day 3 - Exposure, Risks, and Documentation

On the third day, participants learn about exposure hazards, associated health risks, and preventive safety measures. The session also covers required documentation and certification, including transport papers, approvals, and inspection requirements.

Day 4 - Measurement Techniques and Emergency Procedures

The fourth day covers the use of measurement techniques for detecting gases and vapors, identifying hazards, and applying preventive measures. Training also includes the use of breathing apparatus and firefighting techniques, with practical exercises on emergency response.

Day 5 - Stability and Safety

The final day focuses on vessel stability during the transport of dangerous goods. Participants learn how cargo distribution, liquid movement, and structural factors influence stability and how to maintain safety in accordance with ADN regulations.

Participants learn how to safely and effectively extinguish fires using handheld and portable fire extinguishers. Training takes place in realistic outdoor fire scenarios, allowing trainees to experience firsthand how different extinguishers work and what their limitations are.

What makes this facility unique is the hands-on approach to a variety of fire situations — from small liquid and gas fires to solid materials. Participants not only practice firefighting techniques but also learn to assess safety, distance, and the appropriate extinguishing strategy.

The Small Fire Extinguisher Training Area is used by maritime personnel, offshore teams, industrial emergency responders, and emergency response officers (BHV) who need to know how to control small fires quickly and effectively.
