STCW Medical First Aid (MFA)

Introduction
The STCW Medical First Aid course meets the international requirements of the STCW Code, Section A-VI/4-1, and is mandatory for all crew members assigned medical duties on board. DRTC’s training combines theory and practice in an interactive learning environment. Participants work with realistic scenarios and the same medical equipment available on board. Under the guidance of experienced medical instructors, they learn to perform life-saving procedures, assess casualties, and apply appropriate medical care within the operational context of life at sea.

Objective
Upon successful completion of the STCW Medical First Aid course, participants will have the knowledge, skills, and confidence to:

  • Assess medical emergencies and provide first aid

  • Perform life-saving procedures

  • Stabilize casualties until professional medical help is available

  • Communicate effectively with the Radio Medical Service (RMD)

  • Use the ship’s medical guide and onboard medical equipment

Target group
This course is intended for:

  • Captains, officers, and seafarers responsible for providing medical care on board

  • Crew members who must meet STCW requirements for basic medical care

Entry requirements
Participants must hold:

  • A valid STCW Basic Safety Training certificate

  • Good physical and mental fitness to safely participate in practical exercises (such as CPR and wound treatment)

  • Basic knowledge of the English language (for medical terminology and communication with the Radio Medical Service)

Course content
The training consists of interactive theoretical sessions and extensive practical exercises, including:

  • Basic principles of medical care on board

  • Life-saving procedures (Basic Life Support, CPR, use of AED)

  • Examination of casualties and assessment of vital signs

  • Treatment of wounds, bleeding, fractures, and burns

  • Stabilizing casualties in cases of shock and hypothermia

  • Administration of medication using the medical supplies available on board

  • Use and application of the ship’s medical guide

  • Communication with the Radio Medical Service (RMD)

  • Application of medical procedures in case of accidents and illnesses on board

Practical exercises are conducted using professional manikins, medical kits, and materials identical to those found on ships to ensure a realistic and hands-on learning experience.

Certification
Upon successful completion of the course and demonstration of the required competencies, participants receive the officially recognized certificate:
Proficiency in Medical First Aid, STCW Reg. VI/4, Section A-VI/4, Table A-VI/4-1.

Validity
Five years.

This course meets international STCW standards and is recognized by the Human Environment and Transport Inspectorate (ILT) and the International Maritime Organization (IMO).

Day 1 - Basic Medical Knowledge and Onboard First Aid

Day one covers human anatomy and physiology, along with the (VL)ABCDE method for casualty assessment. Participants learn about onboard medications, trauma care, spinal injuries, fractures, and sprains. The session also includes treatment of drowning and hypothermia, artificial respiration, and safe casualty handling using the Rautek maneuver and transport techniques.

Day 2 - Medical Procedures and Emergency Communication

Day two focuses on medical interventions and coordination with external emergency services. Topics include helicopter evacuation and communication; Medical Assistance at Sea. Participants practice chest and abdominal examinations, assessment of vital signs and consciousness disorders, and management of respiratory issues. The day concludes with exercises on the recovery position, bandaging techniques, and various first aid scenarios tailored to the maritime environment.

Yes, our STCW courses are recognised by the Dutch flag state (the Human Environment and Transport Inspectorate – ILT). Each certificate includes the relevant STCW reference, ensuring international recognition.

We offer Basic Training (BT), Advanced Fire Fighting (AFF), Medical First Aid (MFA), Medical Care (MC), Proficiency in (Fast) Rescue Boats (PSCRB/FRB), and Security Awareness/Designated Duties.

Most STCW certificates must be renewed every 5 years (depending on the module and sea time requirements). Check the course page for exact details.

Yes, a valid maritime medical certificate is mandatory for participation.

Bring valid identification, a medical certificate (mandatory), and swimwear/towel if the course includes a pool module. PPE and rescue equipment are provided by DRTC.

 

Courses are available in Dutch or English. Additional support for reading difficulties can be arranged on request.

For customised training you may cancel free of charge up to 14 working days before the start. If you cancel within those deadlines the full course fee will be invoiced.
