About this course

GWO WAH + MH + FAW

Introduction
The GWO WAH + MH + FAW training combines three essential Global Wind Organisation (GWO) safety modules into one comprehensive course. The training consists of both theoretical and practical components and prepares participants to work safely within the wind industry. During the course, participants learn how to work safely at height, apply ergonomic manual handling techniques and respond effectively to fire and emergency situations.

Objective
Upon successful completion of the GWO WAH + MH + FAW training, participants will have the knowledge and practical skills required to work safely and responsibly within the wind industry. Participants will be able to work safely at height, use personal protective equipment correctly, reduce physical strain by applying ergonomic working methods, and recognise and respond appropriately to fire hazards. In addition, they will be able to follow established safety procedures and respond effectively to emergency situations in accordance with the Global Wind Organisation (GWO) standards.

Target Group
This training is intended for personnel who work or plan to work in the wind industry and require the GWO Working at Heights, Manual Handling and Fire Awareness certificates to perform their work safely.

Practical info

Entry Requirements

  • You are physically fit to participate in all practical training exercises.
  • Due to the use of personal protective equipment, your body weight must not exceed 120 kilograms.
  • You do not suffer from a fear of heights.
  • If you use medication, this must be reported during the booking process. If the medication restricts participation, the booking will be cancelled free of charge.
  • You are in possession of a valid WINDA ID.

Course Content

GWO Working at Heights (WAH)
This module covers safe working at height in wind turbine environments. Participants learn the correct use of personal fall protection equipment, emergency procedures, and rescue techniques, as well as how to identify risks and apply safe working practices.

Topics covered include:

  • Legislation and regulations for working at height;
  • Hazard identification and risk assessment;
  • Use, inspection, and maintenance of personal fall protection equipment;
  • Safe climbing, descending, and work positioning;
  • Basic rescue procedures and evacuation at height.

GWO Manual Handling (MH)
The Manual Handling module focuses on the safe lifting, carrying, and moving of loads. Emphasis is placed on ergonomic working practices, preventing physical strain, and promoting safe teamwork during manual handling activities.

Topics covered include:

  • Principles of ergonomics and body mechanics;
  • Identifying and reducing risks associated with manual handling;
  • Safe lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling techniques;
  • Correct use of manual handling aids;
  • Teamwork during manual handling operations.

GWO Fire Awareness (FAW)
The Fire Awareness module focuses on identifying fire hazards, preventing fires, and responding appropriately in the event of a fire incident. Participants learn how to work safely in and around wind turbines and how to respond effectively and safely during emergency situations. The training consists of a combination of theory and practical exercises.

Topics covered include:

  • Basic principles of fire safety;
  • Identifying fire hazards and fire prevention;
  • Emergency evacuation procedures and communication during incidents;
  • Use of portable fire extinguishers and personal protective equipment (PPE);
  • Practical fire extinguishing exercises in realistic scenarios.

Certification
Upon successful completion of the training and assessment of the required competencies, participants receive separate internationally recognised GWO certificates for:

  • Working at Heights (WAH)
  • Manual Handling (MH)
  • Fire Awareness (FAW)

All certificates are registered in the WINDA system.

Validity
The certificates are valid for 2 years.
After this period, the relevant GWO Refresher training must be completed to maintain the validity of the certificates.

Practical Information
Duration: 3 consecutive days
Training hours: 08:30 – 17:00
Recognition: This course is approved by the Global Wind Organisation (GWO) – www.globalwindsafety.org

WINDA Registration
All participants must register with WINDA before attending the GWO training. Registration is mandatory for anyone wishing to work in the wind industry.
After registration, you will receive a WINDA ID, which must be provided when booking the course.
Upon certification, DRTC will register the achieved certificates in the participant's personal WINDA account.

Small Fire Extinguisher Training Area

Realistic training with portable fire extinguishers for small fire scenarios.

Working at Height Tower

Safe working at height training in accordance with GWO standards

Working at Height Tower

Training in safe working, rescue, and evacuation at height in accordance with GWO standards.

Practical training with portable fire extinguishers

Small Fire Extinguisher Training Area

Participants learn how to safely and effectively extinguish fires using handheld and portable fire extinguishers. Training takes place in realistic outdoor fire scenarios, allowing trainees to experience firsthand how different extinguishers work and what their limitations are.

What makes this facility unique is the hands-on approach to a variety of fire situations — from small liquid and gas fires to solid materials. Participants not only practice firefighting techniques but also learn to assess safety, distance, and the appropriate extinguishing strategy.

Who is it for

The Small Fire Extinguisher Training Area is used by maritime personnel, offshore teams, industrial emergency responders, and emergency response officers (BHV) who need to know how to control small fires quickly and effectively.

What you’ll practice

Under the guidance of experienced instructors, participants will learn to:

  • Identify different types of fires and select the appropriate extinguishing agent

  • Use portable extinguishers (powder, foam, CO₂) effectively

  • Extinguish small liquid and gas fires

  • Approach safely and aim extinguishers accurately

  • Understand the limitations and capabilities of portable fire extinguishers

  • Ensure personal safety and assess risks during firefighting

Working at Height Tower

The Working at Height Tower has been specifically designed for training participants in safe working, rescue, and evacuation techniques at height. The tower is widely used for GWO (Global Wind Organisation) courses, such as Working at Heights, and also provides training opportunities for offshore, maritime, and industrial scenarios.

What makes this tower unique is its versatility: participants can practice fall protection, climbing and descent techniques, as well as rescue and evacuation procedures. With multiple platforms and training stations, the tower is suitable for both basic and advanced levels.

Who is it for?

The Working at Height Tower is used by wind industry teams, offshore and maritime personnel, industrial technicians, and emergency responders who need to work safely at height or on elevated installations.
