Introduction
This course combines theory and realistic practical exercises to train participants in recognizing medical emergencies and performing correct interventions. Through demonstrations, exercises, and simulated scenarios, participants learn to react calmly and effectively in critical situations, emphasizing safety, teamwork, and clear communication.

Objective
The goal of this course is to train participants to become competent and confident first responders. Participants learn to perform essential first aid actions during emergencies such as resuscitation, choking, shock, and serious injuries. Upon completion, they will be able to perform life-saving measures and assist professional emergency services until help arrives.

Target group
The course is designed for employees who serve or intend to serve as emergency response officers within their organization, as well as for individuals who wish to acquire first aid skills. Suitable for:

Course content
The course includes both theory and practice, covering the following topics:
  • Basic first aid principles: safely approaching victims, assessing consciousness and breathing
  • Life-saving techniques: CPR, recovery position, Heimlich maneuver, shock management, and controlling severe bleeding
  • Bandaging and wound care: applying dressings, stopping bleeding, and treating wounds and burns
  • AED use: operation of an Automated External Defibrillator in cardiac arrest situations
  • Specific emergencies: first aid for allergies, epilepsy, fainting, and choking
  • Practical drills and simulations: hands-on exercises to build confidence and readiness in real-world scenarios
Certification
Upon successful completion, participants receive the officially recognized NIHBV First Aid Certificate, confirming compliance with the standards set by the Dutch Institute for Company Emergency Response (NIBHV).
 
Validity
The certificate is valid for one year. To maintain competence, participants are encouraged to attend an annual refresher course.

Day 1 - Life-Saving Actions and First Aid

The Basic Emergency Response – Life-Saving Actions course focuses on performing essential first aid techniques in both non-urgent and life-threatening situations. Participants practice applying various types of bandages, supporting fractures, and using slings and pressure dressings. The emergency section covers life-saving procedures such as the Rautek rescue grip, CPR, AED use, the recovery position, and clearing airway obstructions. The course concludes with a written examination on first aid and resuscitation.

  • VCA: usually valid for 10 years
  • BHV: recommended or required annually by most organisations
  • First Aid: validity depends on the certification body, usually annual maintenance and reassessment within 2 years

Yes, we offer blended learning options combining online theory with a shorter practical session.

Bring valid identification and comfortable clothing. For forklift or aerial platform training, safety shoes are required. PPE will be provided where necessary.

DRTC provides a wide range of accredited safety courses for the maritime, offshore, wind and industrial sectors.

  • STCW – including Basic Training, Advanced Fire Fighting, Proficiency in Survival Craft (PSCRB/FRB), Medical First Aid, Medical Care and Security Awareness.
  • GWO – Basic Safety Training (BST) and individual modules such as Working at Height, First Aid, Fire Awareness, Manual Handling, Sea Survival and Enhanced First Aid.
  • NOGEPA – Basic Offshore Safety, Helicopter Underwater Escape (HUET), Sea Survival, Fire-fighting and specialised refresher courses.
  • BHV/First Aid/VCA – Basic and refresher courses in Emergency Response, First Aid and Safety Certification for all sectors.

For some courses, you can choose VAT exemption. This means the training will be invoiced without 21% VAT. The exemption applies only to recognised vocational training programmes that fall under official supervision by organisations such as ILT, OPITO, GWO, or NOGEPA.

Choose VAT exemption if you are taking the course for professional purposes or as a private individual without VAT deduction rights.
Choose including VAT if you are booking on behalf of a company that can reclaim VAT from the Dutch Tax and Customs Administration.

Your invoice will then state:
“Exempt from VAT under Article 11, paragraph 1, section o of the Dutch VAT Act 1968.”

Yes, at DRTC we provide online training and e-learning modules. For example, we offer the online Maritime Dutch Law Assessment.
If you are interested in a specific topic or module for online completion, feel free to contact us so we can explore what options are available.

You can cancel your booking by contacting us via email or phone. For open enrolment courses you may cancel free of charge up to 5 working days before the start. For customised training you may cancel free of charge up to 14 working days before the start. If you cancel within those deadlines the full course fee will be invoiced.
