Introduction
This refresher training combines theoretical instruction with practical exercises that reinforce key life-saving techniques and correct emergency response procedures. Participants are assessed on their hands-on skills to ensure the continued quality and reliability of first aid delivery.

Objective
The objective of the First Aid Refresher Course is to maintain and enhance the competence of certified first aiders. Participants review and update their knowledge, practice emergency response actions, and strengthen their ability to prioritize and act effectively in critical situations.

Target group
This course is intended for holders of a valid First Aid diploma issued by Het Oranje Kruis who wish to maintain their certification and continue to provide high-quality first aid.

Course content
The First Aid Refresher Course covers:

  • The five key points of first aid
  • Basic knowledge of the human body
  • Disorders of vital functions
  • Local disorders and shock
  • Situations and accidents leading to vital function impairment
  • Special skills, minor injuries, and bandaging techniques
  • Use of bandages and first aid tools

Certification
Upon successful completion, participants receive a renewed diploma from Het Oranje Kruis, confirming their ongoing competence in delivering first aid according to official Dutch standards.

Validity
The diploma is valid for two years. To maintain certification, participants must attend at least one refresher training day per year and complete a competence assessment. If these requirements are not met, the diploma expires after two years.

Day 1 - Review of knowledge and skills

This refresher course is designed for holders of the Oranje Kruis First Aid Certificate who wish to renew their qualification. The training reviews essential first aid skills including assessment of consciousness and breathing, CPR, AED use, and controlling severe bleeding.

Participants also practice treating common injuries such as wounds, fractures, burns, eye injuries, and choking incidents. Realistic scenario exercises focus on effective response, communication, and teamwork during emergencies. The day concludes with an assessment and renewal of the official Oranje Kruis First Aid Certificate.

Frequently asked questions

Yes, we offer refresher modules for many of our courses. The validity of certificates depends on the standard and course.

For companies and individuals in all sectors (production, logistics, construction, and office environments) who wish to meet occupational safety requirements.

  • VCA: usually valid for 10 years
  • BHV: recommended or required annually by most organisations
  • First Aid: validity depends on the certification body, usually annual maintenance and reassessment within 2 years
    Exact validity details are listed per course.

Yes, we offer blended learning options combining online theory with a shorter practical session.

Bring valid identification and comfortable clothing. For forklift or aerial platform training, safety shoes are required. PPE will be provided where necessary.

DRTC provides a wide range of accredited safety courses for the maritime, offshore, wind and industrial sectors.

  • STCW – including Basic Training, Advanced Fire Fighting, Proficiency in Survival Craft (PSCRB/FRB), Medical First Aid, Medical Care and Security Awareness.
  • GWO – Basic Safety Training (BST) and individual modules such as Working at Height, First Aid, Fire Awareness, Manual Handling, Sea Survival and Enhanced First Aid.
  • NOGEPA – Basic Offshore Safety, Helicopter Underwater Escape (HUET), Sea Survival, Fire-fighting and specialised refresher courses.
  • BHV/First Aid/VCA – Basic and refresher courses in Emergency Response, First Aid and Safety Certification for all sectors.

For some courses, you can choose VAT exemption. This means the training will be invoiced without 21% VAT. The exemption applies only to recognised vocational training programmes that fall under official supervision by organisations such as ILT, OPITO, GWO, or NOGEPA.

Choose VAT exemption if you are taking the course for professional purposes or as a private individual without VAT deduction rights.
Choose including VAT if you are booking on behalf of a company that can reclaim VAT from the Dutch Tax and Customs Administration.

Your invoice will then state:
“Exempt from VAT under Article 11, paragraph 1, section o of the Dutch VAT Act 1968.”

Yes, at DRTC we provide online training and e-learning modules. For example, we offer the online Maritime Dutch Law Assessment.

You can cancel your booking by contacting us via email or phone. For open enrolment courses you may cancel free of charge up to 5 working days before the start. For customised training you may cancel free of charge up to 14 working days before the start. If you cancel within those deadlines the full course fee will be invoiced.
