STCW – Maritime Radiotelephony Operator Course & Exam

Introduction
The STCW – Maritime Radiotelephony Operator Course & Exam (Marifonie) by DRTC provides complete preparation for obtaining the official Basic Maritime Radiotelephony Certificate. This certificate is legally required for anyone operating marine communication equipment on inland waterways, coastal waters, or at sea.

During the course, participants learn both theoretical and practical aspects of maritime communication in accordance with international regulations. You will practice using VHF radio equipment, distress calls, and communication procedures to prepare for the official exam.
DRTC also manages all administrative processes, including registration and coordination of the CBR exam, which is conducted under the supervision of the Dutch Radiocommunications Agency (Agentschap Telecom).

Objective
After completing the course, participants will be able to:

  • operate marine radio equipment safely and correctly;

  • perform distress, urgency, and safety calls according to international procedures;

  • use appropriate frequencies, call signs, and communication protocols;

  • communicate effectively with ships, shore stations, and emergency services.

This course is intended for:

  • crew members, skippers, and recreational boaters operating marine VHF radios;

  • professionals in inland navigation, fishing, or coastal shipping who need to manage radio communication on board

Course Content
The course combines theory and practical training, covering:

  • fundamentals of maritime radio communication;

  • distress, urgency, and safety procedures;

  • operation and configuration of VHF equipment;

  • correct use of channels, call signs, and protocols;

  • practical exercises with distress calls and routine communication.

Exam Information
The Marifonie exam consists of a 1-hour theory test administered by the CBR under the authority of Agentschap Telecom.
DRTC handles the entire administrative process, from registration to scheduling, allowing you to focus fully on your preparation.

Certification
Upon successful completion, participants receive the Maritime Radiotelephony Operator Certificate, granting the right to operate maritime communication equipment on inland waterways, coastal waters, and at sea. The certificate is valid indefinitely.

Yes, our STCW courses are recognised by the Dutch flag state (the Human Environment and Transport Inspectorate – ILT). Each certificate includes the relevant STCW reference, ensuring international recognition.

We offer Basic Training (BT), Advanced Fire Fighting (AFF), Medical First Aid (MFA), Medical Care (MC), Proficiency in (Fast) Rescue Boats (PSCRB/FRB), and Security Awareness/Designated Duties.

Most STCW certificates must be renewed every 5 years (depending on the module and sea time requirements). Check the course page for exact details.

Yes, a valid maritime medical certificate is mandatory for participation.

Bring valid identification, a medical certificate (mandatory), and swimwear/towel if the course includes a pool module. PPE and rescue equipment are provided by DRTC.

 

Courses are available in Dutch or English. Additional support for reading difficulties can be arranged on request.

You will receive a digital and/or physical certificate in compliance with STCW standards. The format may vary by course.

You can cancel your booking by contacting us via email or phone. For open enrolment courses you may cancel free of charge up to 5 working days before the start. For customised training you may cancel free of charge up to 14 working days before the start. If you cancel within those deadlines the full course fee will be invoiced.
