Deksman Basisopleiding Binnenvaart (Vrijstelling BHV Brand)

The Deckhand Basic Training Inland Navigation provides practical safety training on inland vessels, including firefighting, first aid and the correct use of life-saving appliances. The course complies with the CESNI standards (Decision CESNI 2021-I-1) and Directive (EU) 2017/2397.

Upon successful completion, participants receive a CBR-recognized CESNI Deckhand Safety Certificate, which allows them to apply for a service record book (SAB).

Exemption
This course can be taken with exemption if the participant holds a valid STCW Basic Safety Training (Fisheries) certificate or a valid Emergency Response/First Aid diploma. Please contact us for verification.

About this course

Deckhand Basic Training Inland Navigation (Exemption Fire Response)

Objective
Upon completion of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Correctly use life-saving appliances to prevent drowning

  • Identify and manage specific working conditions on board

  • Perform firefighting on board

  • Handle noise and hazardous substances safely

  • Provide basic first aid in emergency situations

Entry Requirements

  • No specific prior knowledge required

  • Minimum age: 16 years

  • Valid ID and inland navigation medical certificate

  • Dry undergarments for practical exercises

A medical examination for inland navigation can be arranged prior to the course if needed.

Certification
After successful completion, participants receive:

  • Deckhand Safety Training Certificate (CESNI/CBR)

  • Emergency Response (BHV) Certificate

Duration and Schedule
First day: registration at 08:15, training from 08:30 to approximately 16:30.
Includes registration fees, practical materials, course documentation, lunch, coffee, and tea (excluding VAT).

Language
The course is taught in Dutch by default but can also be provided in English upon request.

Day 1 - Safe Working Practices Onboard

The first day focuses on safety procedures and working conditions on board. Participants learn how to move safely around the vessel, handle ropes, winches, and anchor gear, and recognize hazards during deck operations. Emergency procedures, onboard communication, and the use of personal protective equipment are also covered. The day includes a guided tour of the training vessel with demonstrations of safe working practices.

Day 2 - Lifesaving Equipment and Survival Skills

Day two focuses on the use of lifesaving appliances and water survival. Participants practice donning lifejackets, launching life rafts, and carrying out water exercises, including survival positions and casualty recovery.

Day 3 - First Aid

The final day covers the basic principles of first aid, including CPR with AED, wound treatment, and the recovery position. This session takes place in the morning only.

Frequently asked questions

For some courses, you can choose VAT exemption. This means the training will be invoiced without 21% VAT. The exemption applies only to recognised vocational training programmes that fall under official supervision by organisations such as ILT, OPITO, GWO, or NOGEPA.

Choose VAT exemption if you are taking the course for professional purposes or as a private individual without VAT deduction rights.
Choose including VAT if you are booking on behalf of a company that can reclaim VAT from the Dutch Tax and Customs Administration.

Your invoice will then state:
“Exempt from VAT under Article 11, paragraph 1, section o of the Dutch VAT Act 1968.”

Yes, we offer blended learning options combining online theory with a shorter practical session.

Bring valid identification and comfortable clothing. For forklift or aerial platform training, safety shoes are required. PPE will be provided where necessary.

You can cancel your booking by contacting us via email or phone. For open enrolment courses you may cancel free of charge up to 5 working days before the start. For customised training you may cancel free of charge up to 14 working days before the start. If you cancel within those deadlines the full course fee will be invoiced.
