STCW - Elementary First Aid (EFA) Refresher

Introduction
The EFA training provides participants with insight into the immediate actions required in the event of accidents or medical emergencies on board a ship. The course combines theoretical instruction with practical exercises, including resuscitation, treatment of injuries, and communication in maritime environments.

Objective
Upon successful completion of the course, the participant will have the knowledge and skills necessary to provide elementary first aid on board a ship until professional medical assistance becomes available.

Target group
This course is intended for seafarers or crew members who work on board and are responsible for, or may be involved in, providing first aid, and who wish to obtain the Elementary First Aid certificate.

Entry requirements
Minimum age: 17 years and 9 months

Participants must hold:

  • a relevant and valid Basic or Refresher BST certificate and a valid Certificate of Competency
  • A valid medical certificate for seagoing service
  • Good health and physical fitness to safely participate in practical exercises (

Course content
The course covers the following topics:

  • Recognizing accidents and medical emergencies on board

  • Maritime communication and alert procedures in first aid situations

  • Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) with practical exercises on manikins

  • Treatment of shock, choking, and heart attack

  • Head injuries, spinal injuries, fractures, and burns

  • Bleeding, drowning, and hypothermia

Certification
Upon successful completion, participants receive the Proficiency in Elementary First Aid certificate, in accordance with STCW Reg. VI/1, Section A-VI/1, Table A-VI/1-3.

Day 1 - First Aid & CPR

This hands-on session covers the essentials of first aid and resuscitation. After a brief theory introduction, participants practice wound care, the recovery position, and performing CPR with an AED. The training prepares them to respond quickly and effectively to medical emergencies at sea.

For seafarers and maritime professionals who must comply with international STCW requirements.

Yes, our STCW courses are recognised by the Dutch flag state (the Human Environment and Transport Inspectorate – ILT). Each certificate includes the relevant STCW reference, ensuring international recognition.

We offer Basic Training (BT), Advanced Fire Fighting (AFF), Medical First Aid (MFA), Medical Care (MC), Proficiency in (Fast) Rescue Boats (PSCRB/FRB), and Security Awareness/Designated Duties.

Most STCW certificates must be renewed every 5 years (depending on the module and sea time requirements). Check the course page for exact details.

Yes, a valid maritime medical certificate is mandatory for participation.

Bring valid identification, a medical certificate (mandatory), and swimwear/towel if the course includes a pool module. PPE and rescue equipment are provided by DRTC.

 

Courses are available in Dutch or English. Additional support for reading difficulties can be arranged on request.

You will receive a digital and/or physical certificate in compliance with STCW standards. The format may vary by course.

You can cancel your booking by contacting us via email or phone. For open enrolment courses you may cancel free of charge up to 5 working days before the start. For customised training you may cancel free of charge up to 14 working days before the start. If you cancel within those deadlines the full course fee will be invoiced.
