STCW - Maritime Dutch Law Assessment

Introduction
The online Maritime Dutch Law Assessment focuses on Dutch maritime legislation that masters, chief officers, and chief engineers must be familiar with in order to have their certificates of competency recognized or to obtain a Dutch certificate of competency. This exam is mandatory for seafarers who wish to sail under the Dutch flag. It is conducted entirely online, allowing candidates to participate remotely.

Target group
Masters of non-Dutch nationality, as well as chief officers and chief engineers who intend to serve on vessels sailing under the Dutch flag, in accordance with the Besluit zeevarenden handelsvaart en zeilvaart (Bzhz) and international STCW requirements.

Practical info

Entry requirements
Participants must meet the following requirements:

  • A good command of the English language (the exam is conducted in English)

  • Education in accordance with the STCW 1978 standards, including the Manila Amendments 2010

  • The syllabus must be thoroughly studied beforehand and may be used in printed form during the exam

  • A mandatory preparation period of at least five days applies between booking and the exam date

Exam content
The syllabus covers the main Dutch laws and regulations applicable to maritime operations, including:

  • Besluit zeevarenden handelsvaart en zeilvaart (Bzhz)

  • Schepenwet (Ships Act)

  • Zeebrievenwet (Ship Registration Act)

  • Arbeidsomstandighedenwet (Working Conditions Act)

  • Wet scheepsuitrusting 2016 (Ship Equipment Act 2016)

  • Wet voorkoming verontreiniging door schepen (Prevention of Pollution from Ships Act)

  • Wetboek van Koophandel (Commercial Code – Book 7: Maritime Law)

  • Burgerlijk Wetboek (Civil Code – Book 8: Transport and Shipping)

Exam duration
The exam lasts 60 minutes and is conducted orally.
Use of the printed syllabus is permitted.
The exam may be taken online via Microsoft Teams under specific conditions.

Certification
Upon successful completion, the participant receives a certificate in accordance with Article 10 of the Besluit zeevarenden handelsvaart en zeilvaart (Bzhz) and the provisions of STCW Section A-II/1 and A-II/2 (including the Manila Amendments 2010).

Yes, our STCW courses are recognised by the Dutch flag state (the Human Environment and Transport Inspectorate – ILT). Each certificate includes the relevant STCW reference, ensuring international recognition.

We offer Basic Training (BT), Advanced Fire Fighting (AFF), Medical First Aid (MFA), Medical Care (MC), Proficiency in (Fast) Rescue Boats (PSCRB/FRB), and Security Awareness/Designated Duties.

Most STCW certificates must be renewed every 5 years (depending on the module and sea time requirements). Check the course page for exact details.

Yes, a valid maritime medical certificate is mandatory for participation.

Bring valid identification, a medical certificate (mandatory), and swimwear/towel if the course includes a pool module. PPE and rescue equipment are provided by DRTC.

 

Courses are available in Dutch or English. Additional support for reading difficulties can be arranged on request.

You will receive a digital and/or physical certificate in compliance with STCW standards. The format may vary by course.

You can cancel your booking by contacting us via email or phone. For open enrolment courses you may cancel free of charge up to 5 working days before the start. For customised training you may cancel free of charge up to 14 working days before the start. If you cancel within those deadlines the full course fee will be invoiced.
