About this course

GWO WAH + MH + FA

Introduction
During this combined GWO Working at Heights (WAH), Manual Handling (MH) and First Aid (FA) basic training, participants learn how to work safely at height, reduce physical strain and respond effectively to medical emergencies.

Participants learn how to correctly use fall protection systems and rescue equipment, apply safe lifting techniques and perform lifesaving procedures. They also learn how to stabilise casualties and communicate with emergency services.

The training combines theory with practical exercises, focusing on safety, risk awareness and teamwork.

Objective
The aim of this combined basic training is to provide participants with the knowledge and skills required to work safely at height, handle loads ergonomically and provide effective first aid during accidents and emergencies.

Target Audience
This combined training is intended for anyone working or planning to work in the wind energy industry or related sectors who needs to obtain GWO Working at Heights, Manual Handling and First Aid training records.

Entry Requirements
Participants must:

  • be physically fit to complete all practical exercises;
  • have a maximum body weight of 125 kg (due to PPE restrictions);
  • hold a valid Winda ID (required for GWO registration).

Course Content

GWO Working at Heights (WAH)
The Working at Heights module focuses on performing work safely at height within the wind industry. Participants learn how to correctly use personal fall protection equipment, rescue equipment, and evacuation procedures.

During this module, participants will learn how to:

  • safely climb and descend wind turbines;
  • inspect and correctly use personal fall protection equipment;
  • work with positioning and back-up systems;
  • perform basic rescue procedures using approved rescue equipment;
  • identify hazards and apply emergency procedures.

The module combines theory with intensive practical exercises, increasing safety awareness and confidence while working at height.

GWO Manual Handling (MH)
The Manual Handling module teaches participants how to safely and ergonomically lift, carry, and move loads within the wind turbine industry.

During this module, participants will learn how to:

  • apply correct lifting techniques and working postures;
  • prevent physical strain and injuries;
  • identify risks associated with manual handling tasks;
  • work safely together when moving heavy components;
  • apply ergonomic working methods, even in confined spaces.

The training focuses on awareness, correct body mechanics, and safe working practices during manual handling tasks.

GWO First Aid (FA)
The First Aid module prepares participants to provide first aid in the wind industry, where professional medical assistance may not always be immediately available.

During this module, participants will learn how to:

  • recognise and assess emergency situations;
  • perform life-saving first aid procedures;
  • stabilise casualties until professional medical assistance arrives;
  • provide first aid for burns, hypothermia, severe bleeding, fractures, and other common injuries;
  • communicate effectively with emergency services and colleagues during emergency situations.

The practical exercises are based on realistic scenarios commonly encountered within the wind industry.

WINDA Registration
All participants must register in WINDA, the international registration system of the Global Wind Organisation (GWO), before the start of the training. After registration, the participant will receive a WINDA ID, which must be provided when booking the course. Upon successful completion of the training, DRTC will automatically link the training records to the participant's WINDA account.

Working safely at height - Monday

The first day focuses on safe working and rescue at height. Participants use fall protection equipment, inspect PPE and practise rescue operations in realistic turbine structures. Communication, coordination and personal accountability are key throughout the day.

Practical application and rescue operations - Tuesday

The second day integrates all skills in realistic rescue and emergency scenarios. Participants perform rescues, administer first aid and work together in complex situations that test leadership and coordination. The course concludes with evaluation and individual feedback to reinforce professional safety behaviour.

First Aid and Life-Saving Procedures - Wednesday

Participants learn life-saving first aid following the ABC structure, including treating bleeding, performing CPR, and using an AED. The course also covers burns, eye injuries, fractures, and hypothermia.

Safe Lifting and Physical Work Techniques - Thursday morning

This course focuses on preventing muscle and joint injuries through safe and ergonomic working methods. Participants learn correct lifting techniques, body positioning, and dynamic risk assessment. Practical exercises include lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, and the safe use of hand tools.

What's on the program?
