STCW – Maritime Dutch Law Assessment - Re-examination

Introduction
The Maritime Dutch Law Assessment Re-examination covers current Dutch maritime legislation that masters, chief officers, and chief engineers must be familiar with in order to have their certificates of competency recognized or to obtain a Dutch certificate of competency. The exam is conducted entirely online, allowing candidates to participate remotely.

Note
A minimum preparation period of five days must be observed between booking and the exam date.

Target group
Masters of non-Dutch nationality, as well as chief officers and chief engineers who intend to serve under the Dutch flag, in accordance with the Besluit zeevarenden handelsvaart en zeilvaart (Bzhz) and international STCW requirements.

Entry requirements
Participants must meet the following conditions:

  • Good command of the English language (the exam is conducted orally in English)

  • Education in accordance with STCW 1978 standards, including the Manila Amendments 2010

  • The syllabus must be thoroughly studied prior to the exam

  • The syllabus can be requested from DRTC via drtc@drtc.nl

Exam content
The syllabus covers the main Dutch maritime laws and regulations relevant to seafaring, including:

  • Besluit zeevarenden handelsvaart en zeilvaart (Bzhz)

  • Schepenwet (Ships Act)

  • Zeebrievenwet (Ship Registration Act)

  • Arbeidsomstandighedenwet (Working Conditions Act)

  • Wet scheepsuitrusting 2016 (Ship Equipment Act 2016)

  • Wet voorkoming verontreiniging door schepen (Prevention of Pollution from Ships Act)

  • Wetboek van Koophandel (Commercial Code – Book 7: Maritime Law)

  • Burgerlijk Wetboek (Civil Code – Book 8: Transport and Shipping)

Exam information

  • Duration: 60 minutes (oral exam)

  • Permitted materials: use of the printed syllabus is allowed

  • Location: the exam is conducted online via Microsoft Teams (under certain conditions)

Certification
Upon successful completion of the re-examination, the candidate receives a certificate in accordance with Article 10 of the Besluit zeevarenden handelsvaart en zeilvaart (Bzhz) and the provisions of STCW Section A-II/1 and A-II/2 (including the Manila Amendments 2010).

Number of participants
The Maritime Dutch Law Assessment – Re-examination is conducted individually.

Exams on request can be arranged via drtc@drtc.nl.
Registration must be completed at least two weeks prior to the exam date.

Special notes
The re-examination is conducted entirely online, there is no need to attend the training centre in person.

For seafarers and maritime professionals who must comply with international STCW requirements.

Yes, our STCW courses are recognised by the Dutch flag state (the Human Environment and Transport Inspectorate – ILT). Each certificate includes the relevant STCW reference, ensuring international recognition.

We offer Basic Training (BT), Advanced Fire Fighting (AFF), Medical First Aid (MFA), Medical Care (MC), Proficiency in (Fast) Rescue Boats (PSCRB/FRB), and Security Awareness/Designated Duties.

Most STCW certificates must be renewed every 5 years (depending on the module and sea time requirements). Check the course page for exact details.

Yes, a valid maritime medical certificate is mandatory for participation.

Bring valid identification, a medical certificate (mandatory), and swimwear/towel if the course includes a pool module. PPE and rescue equipment are provided by DRTC.

 

Courses are available in Dutch or English. Additional support for reading difficulties can be arranged on request.

You will receive a digital and/or physical certificate in compliance with STCW standards. The format may vary by course.

You can cancel your booking by contacting us via email or phone. For open enrolment courses you may cancel free of charge up to 5 working days before the start. For customised training you may cancel free of charge up to 14 working days before the start. If you cancel within those deadlines the full course fee will be invoiced.
