The SCV Code Boat Engineer Grade II (2) is part of the Safety Code for Small Commercial Vessels (SCV Code), which establishes operational standards for safety, crew certification, welfare, and marine environmental protection within the Caribbean Trading Area. It applies to vessels between 5 and 24 meters in length. This course is intended for engineers responsible for the engine room of vessels under 24 meters with main propulsion engines not exceeding 750 kW in protected waters and for vessels between 15 and 24 meters operating with engines up to 750 kW in coastal waters. The course is delivered by De Ruyter Training & Consultancy (DRTC) in Aruba, Bonaire, St. Eustatius, Curaçao, and Saba.

SCV Code Boat Engineer Grade II (2)

Introduction
The 2021 SCV Code ensures the safe and sustainable operation of small commercial vessels in the Caribbean region. The Boat Engineer Grade II (2) program prepares participants for technical responsibilities within the engine room of small vessels. Through theory and practical exercises, participants gain expertise in ship engines, propulsion, electrical systems, and safe maintenance procedures, ensuring safe operation under varying conditions.

Objective
The objective of this training is to qualify participants as competent marine engineers with knowledge of emergency procedures, technical work practices, pollution prevention, ship engines, electrical systems, and auxiliary machinery. Participants will also learn to operate propulsion and pumping systems safely, perform drydock procedures, apply seamanship skills, and understand ship types, layouts, and safety standards.

Target group
This course is designed for engineers responsible for the engine room of vessels under 24 meters with propulsion engines up to 750 kW operating in protected waters, and for vessels of 15 to 24 meters with engines up to 750 kW in coastal waters within the Caribbean Trading Area.

Entry requirements
Participants must meet the following requirements:

  • Minimum age of 18 years
  • Valid medical certificate
  • Physically fit for practical participation

The following STCW Basic Safety Training certificates are required (available at DRTC Caribbean):

  • Basic Sea Survival (IMO Model Course 1.19)
  • Elementary First Aid (IMO Model Course 1.13)
  • Basic Firefighting (IMO Model Course 1.20)
  • Personal Safety and Social Responsibility (IMO Model Course 1.21)

Course content
The course combines theory and practice, covering:

  • Emergency procedures and actions
  • Technical work and maintenance procedures
  • Marine pollution prevention
  • Ship engines and propulsion systems
  • Electrical systems, pumps, and auxiliaries
  • Outboard engines and maintenance
  • Safe working procedures and practices
  • Basic dry docking and seamanship
  • Docking, mooring, and unmooring operations
  • Knowledge of ship types and engine room layouts
  • Basic onboard safety

Examination
Assessment is conducted through an oral examination testing participants’ knowledge of ship engines, propulsion systems, auxiliary machinery, outboard engines, and safe work practices, as well as their response to emergency situations.

Accreditation
The course is accredited by the Netherlands Human Environment and Transport Inspectorate (ILT).

Certification
Upon successful completion, participants receive the Boat Engineer Grade 2 certificate in accordance with the Code of Safety for Small Vessels (SCV Code), Chapter X and Annex 11.

Validity
The certificate is valid indefinitely, provided competence is maintained through operational experience.

For some courses, you can choose VAT exemption. This means the training will be invoiced without 21% VAT. The exemption applies only to recognised vocational training programmes that fall under official supervision by organisations such as ILT, OPITO, GWO, or NOGEPA.

Choose VAT exemption if you are taking the course for professional purposes or as a private individual without VAT deduction rights.
Choose including VAT if you are booking on behalf of a company that can reclaim VAT from the Dutch Tax and Customs Administration.

Your invoice will then state:
“Exempt from VAT under Article 11, paragraph 1, section o of the Dutch VAT Act 1968.”
