Entry requirements
Participants must meet the following requirements:
- Minimum age of 18 years
- Valid medical certificate
- Physically fit for practical participation
The following STCW Basic Safety Training certificates are required (available at DRTC Caribbean):
- Basic Sea Survival (IMO Model Course 1.19)
- Elementary First Aid (IMO Model Course 1.13)
- Basic Firefighting (IMO Model Course 1.20)
- Personal Safety and Social Responsibility (IMO Model Course 1.21)
Course content
The course combines theory and practice, covering:
- Emergency procedures and actions
- Technical work and maintenance procedures
- Marine pollution prevention
- Ship engines and propulsion systems
- Electrical systems, pumps, and auxiliaries
- Outboard engines and maintenance
- Safe working procedures and practices
- Basic dry docking and seamanship
- Docking, mooring, and unmooring operations
- Knowledge of ship types and engine room layouts
- Basic onboard safety
Examination
Assessment is conducted through an oral examination testing participants’ knowledge of ship engines, propulsion systems, auxiliary machinery, outboard engines, and safe work practices, as well as their response to emergency situations.
Accreditation
The course is accredited by the Netherlands Human Environment and Transport Inspectorate (ILT).
Certification
Upon successful completion, participants receive the Boat Engineer Grade 2 certificate in accordance with the Code of Safety for Small Vessels (SCV Code), Chapter X and Annex 11.
Validity
The certificate is valid indefinitely, provided competence is maintained through operational experience.
