Combined Basic and Advanced training for service on ships subject to the IGF Code

Introduction
With the growing transition toward alternative fuels such as LNG, it is essential that maritime professionals are properly trained to operate and manage fuel systems safely and efficiently. This combined course delivers both the fundamental and advanced knowledge required under the IGF Code, integrating classroom instruction with extensive practical exercises focused on safe bunkering, fuel management, emergency response, firefighting, and environmental protection.

Objective
The objective of this training is to fully qualify participants to serve on board ships using gases or other low-flashpoint fuels. Upon completion, participants are able to operate fuel systems safely, plan and supervise bunkering operations, prevent environmental pollution, manage emergencies effectively, apply safety and firefighting procedures, and comply with all international safety and environmental regulations as set out in the IGF Code and STCW Convention.

Target group
The course is intended for masters, officers, engineers, and other technical personnel responsible for the operation, maintenance, and supervision of fuel systems on IGF Code-compliant vessels.

Entry requirements
Participants must hold:

  • A valid Certificate of Competency (CoC)
  • A valid medical certificate
  • Adequate command of English for technical and operational communication

Course content
The combined training includes the full scope of the basic and advanced IGF Code training modules, integrating theoretical instruction and practical exercises.

Theoretical part

  • IGF Code, MARPOL, and related IMO conventions
  • Properties and behavior of gases and low-flashpoint fuels
  • Risk assessment, hazard control, and emergency procedures
  • Ship design, propulsion systems, and fuel installations
  • Operation and maintenance of fuel-related systems
  • Health, safety, and environmental regulations
  • Bunkering procedures and pollution prevention
  • Fire prevention, detection systems, and firefighting installations

Practical part

  • Operation and monitoring of fuel systems and safety equipment
  • Conducting safe bunkering and transfer operations
  • Responding to leaks, spills, and emergencies
  • Use of gas detection and monitoring equipment
  • Application of protective gear and safety procedures
  • Practical exercises using gas detection and firefighting simulators

Certification
Upon successful completion, participants receive the STCW Combined Basic and Advanced Training for Service on Ships Subject to the IGF Code certificate, issued in accordance with STCW Section A-V/3 paragraphs 1 and 2, and recognized by the competent maritime authority.

Validity
The certificate is valid indefinitely, provided competence is maintained through operational experience.

DRTC provides a wide range of accredited safety courses for the maritime, offshore, wind and industrial sectors.

  • STCW – including Basic Training, Advanced Fire Fighting, Proficiency in Survival Craft (PSCRB/FRB), Medical First Aid, Medical Care and Security Awareness.
  • GWO – Basic Safety Training (BST) and individual modules such as Working at Height, First Aid, Fire Awareness, Manual Handling, Sea Survival and Enhanced First Aid.
  • NOGEPA – Basic Offshore Safety, Helicopter Underwater Escape (HUET), Sea Survival, Fire-fighting and specialised refresher courses.

Yes, we offer refresher modules for many of our courses. The validity of certificates depends on the standard and course.

For some courses, you can choose VAT exemption. This means the training will be invoiced without 21% VAT. The exemption applies only to recognised vocational training programmes that fall under official supervision by organisations such as ILT, OPITO, GWO, or NOGEPA.

Choose VAT exemption if you are taking the course for professional purposes or as a private individual without VAT deduction rights.
Choose including VAT if you are booking on behalf of a company that can reclaim VAT from the Dutch Tax and Customs Administration.

Your invoice will then state:
“Exempt from VAT under Article 11, paragraph 1, section o of the Dutch VAT Act 1968.”

Please inform us in advance when booking. We will make suitable arrangements, such as extra guidance, adapted materials, or additional time during assessments.

You can cancel your booking by contacting us via email or phone. For open enrolment courses you may cancel free of charge up to 5 working days before the start. For customised training you may cancel free of charge up to 14 working days before the start. If you cancel within those deadlines the full course fee will be invoiced.
