The STCW – ECDIS course is intended for seafarers working at the operational or management level who must meet international and national requirements for the use of Electronic Chart Display and Information Systems (ECDIS). The training provides participants with thorough knowledge and practical skills to correctly apply ECDIS in ship navigation and to promote safety at sea.

The course complies with the provisions of the STCW Code (A-II/1 and A-II/2), IMO Model Course 1.27, and the relevant SOLAS regulations, and concludes with the internationally recognized STCW ECDIS certificate.

About this course

STCW – Electronics Display (ECDIS) - Type Speficic Transas

Introduction
STCW – Electronic Chart Display and Information System (ECDIS) is an interactive five-day training program designed for deck officers holding a certificate of competency for vessels of more than 500 GT. The course has been developed to meet the international requirements of the STCW Convention (A-II/1 and A-II/2) and the SOLAS regulations for safe navigation. During the training, participants will explore the full capabilities of the NT5000 ECDIS system in depth.

Objective
Throughout the course, participants learn to use ECDIS safely and effectively in both everyday navigation and complex voyages. The training combines theoretical instruction with realistic simulator exercises. The emphasis is on acquiring and demonstrating the competencies required to correctly and responsibly operate electronic chart navigation systems.

Target Group
Deck officers and navigators who are responsible for navigation on board vessels over 500 GT and are required to meet the STCW requirements for the use of ECDIS.

Practical info

Entry Requirements
Participants must:
• Hold a valid Certificate of Competency (CoC) in accordance with STCW ’95 or an equivalent qualification.
• Have completed their first onboard training period if they are maritime academy students (at least SMBW level or comparable nautical knowledge).
• Have an adequate command of the Dutch and/or English language.

Course Content
The course includes both theoretical and practical components, covering:
• Laws and regulations
• Types of electronic charts
• ECDIS data
• Presentation and display of ECDIS information
• Basic navigation functions and settings
• Specific functions for route planning
• Specific functions for route monitoring and chart corrections
• Display and integration of other navigational information
• Data errors or misinterpretations on screen
• Status indications, indicators, and alarms
• Documentation and integrity monitoring
• Backup procedures
• Dangers of overreliance on ECDIS

Certification
Upon successful completion of the course, participants will receive the ECDIS Certificate, in accordance with:
• The relevant sections of Tables A-II/1, A-II/2, and A-II/3, and Part B, Section B-I/12 paragraphs 36–66 of the STCW Code (including the 2010 Manila Amendments).
• The relevant provisions of the Dutch Seafarers Act, the Recognition Regulation Maritime Crews Trainings, and EU Directive 2008/106/EC as amended.
• IMO Model Course 1.27 – The Operational Use of Electronic Chart Display and Information Systems (2012 Edition).
• NSI “Guideline Maritime Simulators” (version 3, January 2014) and Regulation I/12 of the annex to the STCW Convention, including the 2010 Manila Amendments.

08:30 – 17:00 (daily).

Day 1 - Familiarisation ECDIS

On the first day, participants are introduced to the purpose and functions of the ECDIS system. They learn about the value of ECDIS for safe and efficient navigation, the use and interpretation of electronic charts, and the correct operation within the simulator environment.

Day 2 - Watchkeeping with ECDIS

During this day, participants focus on the practical application of ENC’s (Electronic Navigational Charts) in navigation. They will also refresh their knowledge of navigational instruments and learn how to plan and monitor voyages using the ECDIS system.

Day 3 - Planning & Monitoring

On this day, participants learn how to prepare and plan a route using the ECDIS system. In addition, they are trained to recognize, interpret, and appropriately respond to ECDIS alarms.

Day 4 - Practical use on board

On this day, participants practice the practical use of the ECDIS system as it is applied on board. The focus is on performing realistic navigation scenarios and applying the acquired knowledge in real-life situations.

Day 5 - Procedures, reliability and examination

During the final part of the training, attention is given to the procedures and responsibilities associated with the use of ECDIS on board. Participants learn to assess the importance of system and data reliability, including how to manage the limitations of electronic charts and implement appropriate backup procedures. The day concludes with an examination that assesses both theoretical knowledge and practical skills in accordance with applicable national and international standards.

The Classroom Simulation is equipped with modern communication systems, including the GMDSS (Global Maritime Distress and Safety System). Here, participants learn how to manage emergency, safety, and routine communication at sea safely and efficiently.

What makes this simulator unique is that trainees can practice all aspects of maritime communication — including distress calls, alerting, and coordination with rescue services — in a realistic yet safe environment.

Yes, our STCW courses are recognised by the Dutch flag state (the Human Environment and Transport Inspectorate – ILT). Each certificate includes the relevant STCW reference, ensuring international recognition.

We offer Basic Training (BT), Advanced Fire Fighting (AFF), Medical First Aid (MFA), Medical Care (MC), Proficiency in (Fast) Rescue Boats (PSCRB/FRB), and Security Awareness/Designated Duties.

Most STCW certificates must be renewed every 5 years (depending on the module and sea time requirements). Check the course page for exact details.

Yes, a valid maritime medical certificate is mandatory for participation.

Bring valid identification, a medical certificate (mandatory), and swimwear/towel if the course includes a pool module. PPE and rescue equipment are provided by DRTC.

 

Courses are available in Dutch or English. Additional support for reading difficulties can be arranged on request.
